Payson is the versatile forward every coach wants on the floor. He brings elite size with a silky shooting touch, fierce inside footwork, and the ability to space the floor with deep range. He's not just a tall presence, but he’s a smooth playmaker with strong handles for his size, capable of creating plays off the bounce and scoring at all three levels. On defense, he provides length and toughness as a lockdown interior presence, while his energy and above-the-rim finishes in transition turn him into a momentum-shifting force. Add in his reputation as a vocal leader who thrives on lifting teammates, and Payson’s impact goes far beyond the stat sheet.
Last season, playing behind a sloaded senior group, he posted 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game—but his game is rock solid beyond the numbers. He rained 5 triples in a single game against ABC Spotlight, showing off his unlimited range and lightning-quick release. His biggest improvements have come in his ball-handling and overall confidence, proving himself more comfortable initiating plays and stronger with the ball. This offseason, he has been locked in on developing slashing ability, defensive consistency, and building a higher basketball IQ. His main goal is to make waves next season and silence any doubt about what he can bring at the next level.
Payson has faced adversity head-on, learning how to control what can be controlled, like effort, energy, and intensity. Whether it’s minutes, rotations, or matchups, he’s grounded in the belief that consistency and team-first work unlock growth. He thrives on the energy his teammates bring, feeding off their hustle to play louder, harder, and smarter. What fuels him most is trust; his coach’s belief in him changed his entire confidence and outlook, allowing him to step on the floor with freedom and purpose.
Off the court, he enjoys golf, a game of patience, precision, and focus that mirrors his approach to basketball. It’s that balance of fire and composure that makes him stand out: an athlete with the size, skill, and mindset to evolve into a game-changer.
I assess that Payson’s size and versatility give him the tools to immediately help a college program. His ability to stretch the floor as a shooter while providing interior defense makes him a valuable two-way weapon. He has the motor, leadership, and coachability to impact winning right away, whether as a spark in transition or as a steady presence in half-court sets.
Moving forward, expect Payson to emerge as a leader and focal point for Mountain Vista. His improved ball-handling and playmaking at his size make him a matchup problem, and his continued evolution as a slasher and defender will round out his game. With his energy, trust in his work, and relentless will to prove himself, Payson is primed to rise into a rising star to know and a name to remember. Stay tuned for a breakout season ahead.
