6'2, Class of 2028

Riverside HS, KS

Aggressive, physical, and relentless are the words Gavin Schoenfelder uses to describe his game, and they fit perfectly. Every pursuit is full speed, and every opportunity to make a play is treated like it could change the outcome of the game, as Gavin has built his reputation on being the type of defender offenses hate seeing across from them because he never takes a play off. Whether it is stuffing the run, blowing up a play in the backfield, forcing a turnover, or making a momentum-shifting hit, his motor runs hot from the opening whistle until the final snap. The Riverside High School standout brings a dynamic combination of toughness, instincts, confidence, and effort that allows him to impact games in a variety of ways.

The numbers from last season only tell part of the story. Gavin finished with 26 tackles, 2 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries. Those statistics reflect a player who is constantly around the football and always looking to create chaos for opposing offenses. More importantly, they represent a defender who understands that effort creates opportunities. Many of those game-changing plays happened because Gavin refused to quit on a rep, continued chasing the football, and trusted his preparation. While he is proud of what he accomplished, last season fueled an even bigger hunger because he believes his best football is still ahead of him.

One of the biggest reasons Gavin consistently finds himself in position to make plays is what happens before the ball is ever snapped. He studies formations, backfield alignments, tendencies, and situations. He is constantly searching for clues that reveal what an offense wants to do. Film study has become a valuable weapon in his bag because it allows him to react faster and play with confidence. As his football IQ continued growing throughout the season, the game began slowing down. Instead of simply reacting, he started anticipating. That growth allowed him to play faster, trust his instincts, and become a more disruptive defender.

That development in football IQ may have been his biggest improvement throughout the year. Physically, he became stronger and more confident, but mentally he took a major step forward. Understanding offensive concepts, recognizing tendencies, and processing information quicker helped him consistently put himself in position to make impact plays. It transformed him from a player chasing the action into a player creating the action.

Being a multi-sport athlete has also played a huge role in his development. Competing in multiple sports throughout the year has helped improve his athleticism, coordination, balance, conditioning, and overall competitiveness. Those experiences have made him tougher both mentally and physically while exposing him to different challenges and environments. Every season becomes another opportunity to sharpen skills that ultimately transfer back onto the football field. The result is a more complete athlete who continues growing every time he competes.

Adversity is another area where Gavin's mindset stands out. Like every athlete, he has faced difficult moments, mistakes, and setbacks. What separates him is how he responds. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, he focuses on what can be controlled. He learns from mistakes, goes back to work, and attacks the next opportunity with the same confidence and determination. That approach has strengthened his character and taught him that adversity is not something to fear but something to grow through.

What truly separates Gavin from others at his position is the combination of confidence, toughness, leadership, and effort. He does not rely solely on natural ability. He believes in earning everything through hard work and relentless competition. Teammates know they can count on him to bring energy every day. Coaches know they are getting maximum effort every snap. That consistency becomes contagious and helps elevate the entire team around him.

The offseason has been all about becoming faster, stronger, and more explosive. Gavin understands that athletic development can unlock another level of his game, and he has attacked that process with intensity. The results are already beginning to show. At the Sharp Performance Camp, he posted a 4.80 forty-yard dash, a 5.18 agility time, a 23-inch vertical, and an 8'1" broad jump. Those numbers provide a glimpse into the athletic tools he continues developing as he works toward reaching his full potential.

The confidence he carries into the upcoming season is impossible to miss. Gavin believes that if he continues improving his speed, strength, and explosiveness, he can become one of the top defensive players in Kansas. That goal is not built on empty words. It is built on preparation, work ethic, and a willingness to outwork the competition.

Every time Gavin steps onto the field, coaches can expect discipline, effort, toughness, and a player willing to embrace the dirty work that often decides games. They can expect someone who never backs down from a challenge and constantly flies to the football. Fans can expect an even more explosive version of the player they saw last season. They can expect a defender playing with confidence, attacking every play with bad intentions, and doing everything possible to help his team succeed.

I assess that Gavin is a high-motor, defensive playmaker whose value goes far beyond just stats. His football IQ, preparation, and relentless pursuit of the football consistently place him in position to create impact plays. He combines toughness, effort, and instincts to become a disruptive force against both the run and pass. His ability to force turnovers and create negative plays makes him a valuable piece for any defense.

Gavin's ceiling continues to rise because of his commitment to development and his willingness to embrace every challenge. His growth, mentally and physically, over the last year shows there is still room for improvement. As he continues to add strength, explosiveness, and experience, his production should continue to rise. The combination of athletic ability, football intelligence, competitiveness, and relentless effort gives him the tools to become one of the more impactful defensive players in his class. Moving forward, expect Gavin to continue filling stat sheets, creating turnovers, and establishing himself as a difference-maker whenever he steps onto the field. Stay tuned.
