Jesse Jones knows he gives up size playing one technique, so he makes every detail count. He plays with a hard edge, trusts the work he's put into his body and technique, and attacks each snap with the relentless approach his coaches see in him. Through seven weeks, Jesse has 51 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 9 quarterback hurries, 2 fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and 2 touchdowns. That's a fierce impact from a defender who does far more than wait for a play to come his way.
There's another part of Jesse’s season that those numbers can't show. When he lines up at three technique, opponents often slide protection toward him, making a clear shot at the quarterback harder to find. That attention says plenty about the threat he presents, and it gives his defensive line a chance to attack as a group. Jesse credits the players beside him for the work they have done in every part of the game, with their run defense becoming a particular strength for him this season. He's learned how to meet blockers, hold his ground, and get into the play with greater command than he had a year ago.
The work behind that growth has been serious. Jesse cut 0.3 seconds from his 40 time, sharpening the speed he brings to a pass rush, while raising his squat to 500 pounds to add more power against the run. He spent much of the offseason in the weight room because he knew he would be one of his team’s leaders and wanted his preparation to set an example. That mix of added strength and quickness has made his game more explosive, but he focuses on doing his job correctly and keeping mistakes to a minimum.
Jesse’s path to becoming a starter demanded that same persistence. Before his junior season, a new defensive line coach didn't see him as a starter, and Jesse had to fight to earn that spot. He kept working until his play made the decision clear. That experience fits the way he competes now: when a block gets tougher, or an offense sends more help his way, Jesse keeps bringing the same intensity to the next snap.
His preparation begins before the ball moves. Jesse studies each offensive lineman for signs of a pull or a pass, then checks the formation for plays the opponent likes to run from that look. Those clues help him get a jump on what is coming and put his power and quickness to work in the right place. He loves the game, loves making plays, and takes special pride in making his dad proud. That fire is easy to see in the way he battles in the trenches and leads through the work he puts in every day.
Jesse’s compact build gives him a chance to stay low when he meets a bigger blocker. Keeping his hands sharp at that first point of contact can add even more force to the powerful run defense he already brings.
His anticipation gives him a strong starting point against changing offensive looks. As he turns those early clues into an even quicker first move, Jesse can make his backfield presence felt on more snaps. Stay tuned.
