Shaun has spent his life at running back, but when his team needed a quarterback, he stepped in and gave the offense a different spark. He calls himself a versatile athlete, and that fits a player who has lined up at quarterback, running back, defensive back, and linebacker. Speed and strength are part of his game, but Shaun believes his understanding of football helps him use both for his team. This season has tested that belief, and he has answered with the ball in his hands.

Through six games, Shaun has rushed for 1,078 yards and 10 TDs, ranking No. 32 in Texas and No. 2 in his district in rushing yards. His coaches have shaped the game plan to use the running ability he built over years in the backfield. His school has moved into one of the toughest Texas 5A districts, with three top-10 teams on the schedule. In two of those matchups, he rushed for 380 yards and 3 TDs. The competition has been fierce, and Shaun has kept finding a way to make his legs count.

He didn't take the switch lightly. His father and uncle raised and coached him to put the team first, so he took the job when there was no quarterback to fill it. Shaun admits he was extremely nervous, and playing the spot showed him how much more goes into it than people see from the stands. He leaned on his coaches, studied the position, and trusted his feet while he learned. What began as a tough assignment has become a challenge he enjoys, giving him a deeper respect for the players who have played there before him.

Shaun points to strength and a better understanding of the game as his biggest improvements since last season. Playing quarterback has sharpened his vision and helped the action slow down for him. He knows when to be patient and when to turn on his speed, a combination that makes him dangerous once he sees his chance. Coaches can expect him to lead in practice, lift his teammates, and set an example regardless of the result. That attitude has come with Houston Chronicle Player of the Week honors in Week 2, multiple player-of-the-game awards, and a coach-of-the-week honor for the coach guiding him. He also values the Little League and 7-on-7 championships that helped shape his love for football.

His work has continued behind the scenes. Shaun spent the offseason on footwork, strength, and speed, then kept exercise, film study, and recovery in his routine to have his body ready. With a freshman quarterback moving up, he's looking forward to returning to running back. First, he wants to compete with Texas’ No. 1 team this week and show college coaches why he belongs on their recruiting boards. Every snap means more than football to him: Shaun has eight siblings who look up to him, even though he's not the oldest, and his fire comes from wanting to give his family the life they deserve.

Before the snap, Shaun checks for linebackers who may blitz, notes where the safeties are lined up, and compares the play call with the defenders in the box. Those checks give his rushing production more meaning because he's making decisions with a plan instead of just taking off. His game has an electric edge when he finds an opening, while the work he does before the ball moves helps him decide where that opening may be.

Moving back into the backfield gives Shaun a chance to bring a quarterback’s view to his familiar spot. He's seen what the offense asks of the person taking the snap, and that experience can help him work with a young quarterback as the team moves forward. His versatility gives coaches more ways to use him, and his willingness to take on a difficult job says plenty about the teammate they will get.
