Merrick Brock is a fullback and defensive tackle who brings an old-school edge to both sides of the ball. He has the size to deliver a hard hit and the speed to surprise anyone expecting him to move slowly. Whether he's running through contact, leading the way as a blocker, or meeting a ball carrier in the backfield, Merrick wants the man in front of him to feel his presence.

That fierce approach has produced 515 rushing yards and 3 TDs this season, even as Merrick says defenses plan to stop him. He believes it should take more than one defender to bring him down. On the other side of the ball, he has 53 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 3 sacks, despite seeing offenses send plays away from his side.

Merrick gives credit for his growing strength and athleticism to an offseason spent training with Coach Von at Quickstrike Academy in Detroit. There, he sharpened his hand use against offensive linemen while working to move like a skill player with the power of a lineman. His work in the weight room shows that commitment, with a 305-pound bench press, 485-pound squat, and 655-pound deadlift.

Playing against older kids from a young age tested Merrick and built his belief that he belonged on the varsity field as a freshman. He now brings that confidence into his role as a team captain, where being a good teammate and leader matters to him as much as making plays. He studies film and listens closely to his coaches’ preparation, then checks formations before the snap for a chance to attack if he is left with a single blocker.

Merrick knows he still has plenty he wants to accomplish. His plans are big, and the thought of seeing how good he can become fuels his drive to keep working.

I assess that Merrick’s combination of quick movement and heavy contact makes him a dynamic presence near the line of scrimmage. He can turn a narrow opening into a tough run, then bring that same intensity to stopping one.

His attention to blocking technique gives him a way to build on the power he already brings. As his timing and hand placement continue to sharpen, he will make an even stronger mark. Stay tuned.
