Donovan Wesley brings explosive speed to every snap. He wants to be the defender his team can turn to when it needs a stop, using his first step to challenge a blocker and close on the quarterback before a play can develop.
That fierce approach has produced 17 total tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 5 quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery so far this season. Donovan is proud of those numbers, but he points to his work ethic as his biggest improvement since last year. He listens to coaching, picks up new techniques quickly, and makes changes when he sees something he can do better.
Being a backup tested his patience and pushed him to make the most of every chance he got on the field. During the offseason, he worked to become stronger, improve his footwork, and sharpen the explosiveness that makes him dangerous off the edge. His work continues away from practice through game film and videos that help him study his craft and find new ways to attack.
Donovan's goal is to get 5 more sacks, 30 more tackles, 10 more tackles for loss, 20 more quarterback hurries, and seven more forced fumbles before the season ends. Those are big goals, and he wants his play to show just how dominant he can become. Adversity and the people who doubt him keep that fire burning every time he lines up.
I assess that Donovan has made his chance to play count, and his production shows that he's affecting plays in several ways. His willingness to take coaching gives him a solid foundation for handling tougher assignments as the season continues.
The next stretch will show how consistently Donovan can set the edge when offenses run toward him and still threaten the passer when they throw. If he keeps bringing the same intensity to both jobs, he can become an even stronger presence for his team.
