Avery is a prolific scorer and triple-threat punisher who is a sniper from the outside but thrives attacking off the bounce with the ability to pull up on a dime for a mid-range stunner. Avery is strong and crafty enough to get all the way to the rim for fierce finishes. Avery is a versatile combo that excels at the 1 or the 2. Coachable with high IQ and mental toughness.
When not playing basketball, Avery plays the guitar, loves to read the Bible, and plays video games with his brothers and friends.
This past season, Avery averaged 24.1 points per game and earned :
1st team All-district
1st team All region 2nd team All state Leading scorer in District 10 and his biggest accomplishment earlier in his career was being named Freshman year team win District 10 championship.
Avery's biggest improvement is playing faster and shooting from deeper. At the same time, his areas of improvement are to be a better passer and playing off two feet.
Playing AAU for the SPS NXT (Puma), Avery's focus has been increasing his 3-point range, and he also has been working on being a better passer. Playing in the Puma circuit helped Avery's confidence because he could play on a higher level against great competition. Avery also learned how to dig deeper to be his best always. Avery's AAU coach was big on defense and this helped him be a much better defender.
Avery's defining moment was when he scored 35 points against DMV Hoopstars NXT. It was a big moment for Avery because his coach pushed him to be more aggressive. Avery accomplished some AAU goals, but they did not get to compete in the championship.
The biggest challenge for Avery this upcoming season is that many teams face guard and double-team him, and he knows he will have to not get frustrated and find open teammates. Avery's biggest rival is Mercer because they beat them when he was a freshman for the D10 championship, and last year, they beat Avery's team. Avery is determined to get them back this year. Avery feels they can make a deep playoff run but will all need to understand their roles and cater to those strengths.
What fires Avery up most on the court is his deep love for basketball.
Avery handles adversity by remaining level-headed and playing within his strengths.
Avery's advice to those coming behind him would be to know your role and continue to work hard, and the results will come.
The best advice Avery has been given was by a former coach who told him the team goes how he goes, which meant that he has to lead by example.
As Avery strives for the next level, he feels it will take constant hard work, perseverance, and doing whatever it takes! Avery feels like he is a D1 level guard because of his coachability, love for the game, and diverse skill set.
Avery already has several colleges that have reached out and shown interest, mostly one D2 and one D1.
I assess that Avery has the size, body-wise, and skills to excel at the next level. Avery is hungry and passionate about evolving into the best player he can possibly be, and with his IQ and coachability mindset, this young star, along with the unlimited potential to really dominate the floor, will cause his stock to continue to rise. Avery has already proven how fierce he is in the first two years of varsity play. Avery is just coming into his own room, and the ceiling is so high. This is a gem to get on your giant board and track him all season and allow his game to speak loud and clear. Stay tuned.
