Gruber is a crafty Guard with a high IQ and great court vision. He is a pass first, Point Guard, always looking for the open man. He is explosive getting downhill with his freakish speed, which often freezes would be defenders in their tracks. He is very aggressive on defense, diving for loose balls, trying to snatch rebounds and make steals. He has relentless energy.

Last season, he had two back to back 20 point games, and from that moment on, his confidence really began to soar.  Now he feels that a defense has to respect his ability to score at will, and not just dish out a slick pass. His biggest goal going into this upcoming season is to get in touch with multiple college coaches and go on several visits.

Playing AAU for the Carolina Riptide, he worked very hard on his perimeter shooting. He was absolutely an impact player this summer and he definitely elevated his game. He has set the stage for a breakout high school season.

The players surrounding him are a special group. He knows that he has to give it his absolute all, and put in his share, knowing the others will be giving it their all. Iron sharpens iron! His work ethic is contagious and he fires up his teammates with his aggression with diving for loose balls and sliding across the hardwood, or snatching a steal and going on a fast break. He wants to leave his mark in every single game he plays in.

When I asked him what a coach can expect from him, he said “I’m a vocal leader who knows how to bring out the very best in all my teammates. I am extremely coachable, and I have a high game IQ.”  All of that translates to him being a coach on the floor, who will make the proper decisions to set the offense up for success. Add in him being a stingy defender, and you have a problem if you are playing against him.

My personal assessment is that the leadership and grit that this kid possesses, those alone are enough to be able to make an impact at the next level. As he continues to grow and hone his craft, he is only going to get better and better, and that is a scary thought. He has a very high ceiling and he has an incredible work ethic. Being “good” is not enough for him. He puts in the work to be great. He is a hungry and fierce competitor that checks all the boxes that coaches look for. Now add in him being a team first, unselfish player, and you are cooking with gas! Stay tuned!
