Smith is a crafty Guard that thrives in his ability to drive to the hoop and cause chaos while getting in the gaps. He flat out forces the defense to react to him, which also forces them to pick their poison. He can score himself, or if they try to double him, he will set up his teammates with slick passing. He has a very high game IQ and incredible court vision. He plays with a ridiculously high energy level that his team absolutely feeds off. He is a master of never forcing a shot that simply is not there. He is patient and confident enough in his ability to wait until the shot is there, rather than just forcing a poor shot. He is an extremely unselfish player who will be sure to deliver a crips pass that is right on the money. Last, this kid can also play some D, especially in high pressure situations, when the game is on the line.
He has put in a tremendous amount of work over this past offseason and the results are showing. You can’t teach drive, desire, hunger or passion, and this kid has all four.
He played AAU for Stars Basketball and his goals were to develop as much as he could in all facets of his game. He intensely focused on finishing even stronger to the hoop. He was undoubtedly a huge part of his team’s championship run, where he contributed with scoring, passing, rebounding, playing fierce defense as well as masterful passing. His team repeated as champions, and watching them play live, I can see why.
When things aren’t going his team’s way during a game, he has the maturity to not let it rattle him. He clears his head, takes a deep breath and simply moves on. That mental toughness and focus makes him a very dangerous player to have to contend with.
When asked what a coach can expect from him he said “A player that is willing to go the extra mile and do whatever is necessary to help the team win. I very rarely make turnovers, so a coach can count on me to make a smart play rather than forcing anything. I will be the coach on the floor for my team.”
His goal is to play basketball in college, and he really just wants to be able to play the game he loves so much, at the next level. My personal assessment is that he will thrive at the next level, simply based on his skill, heart and fiery passion. The kid just flat out loves to compete and he is a “team first” player, who is always going to make the players around him better as well. I am very excited to watch this kid’s future unfold!
