Being a Maryville kid runs deep. Wearing the red and black is family, history, and pride carried forward with purpose. From ballboy days in elementary school to varsity lights, this program is built on the foundation of belonging. These players represent more than themselves. They carry the weight of every Rebel who came before them, every teammate beside them, and every moment that shaped them.
The foundation of this program is steady and intentional. Head coach Wes Lambert leads with clarity and conviction, supported by a staff that understands exactly what Maryville basketball is supposed to look like. The presence of Randy Lambert, a coach with more than 700 collegiate wins at Maryville College, reinforces a culture rooted in discipline, continuity, and accountability. This program did not reset or rebuild. It evolved, carrying forward championship standards while raising the ceiling.
This current version of Maryville basketball is not hiding from the moment. It is attacking it with confidence and intent. Bigger tournaments and bigger stages are now routine, with appearances in Huntsville, Turnkey, and the Battle of Nashville reflecting a program that has earned its seat at the table and knows how to stay there. Back-to-back state tournament appearances marked a historic step forward, but that is no longer the target. The goal is not to arrive. The goal is to finish. This team is not chasing a trip to the state tournament. The mission is to win it.
Roster changes brought questions entering the season, with multiple contributors from a year ago choosing different paths, including full commitments to football. What followed was clarity. Maryville sits at 12-1, with the only loss coming by a single point on the road at Walker Valley. The record tells part of the story. The rest shows up in how they play.
This team plays fast, fearless, and relentless. Aggressive athletes attack from every position, forcing opponents into impossible choices. Pressure comes in waves. When rotations shift, intensity never drops. Role players thrive because they understand exactly who they are and what is required. Chemistry built over years, combined with skill, toughness, and belief. This is a group that knows the difference between wearing the jersey and honoring it.
The engine starts in the backcourt with Jonathan Woodlee and Eli Owensby. Jonathan controls tempo with pace and authority. A four-year starter with more than 1000 career points, he sets the tone on both ends while filling every area of the stat sheet with 16.2 points, 4.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. He applies constant pressure, reads the floor early, and keeps the offense organized without slowing it down.
Eli complements that control with relentless attack. Averaging just under 16 points per game with nearly 4 assists and 3 rebounds, he collapses defenses, creates advantages, and keeps the ball moving. His speed and handles get him downhill, but it is his feel for timing and space that elevates his impact. Defensively, his effort and toughness show up in pressure, rebounding, and disruption.
Inside, the paint belongs to Luke Sigmond. At 6’9 and 220 pounds, he is averaging just under 20 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game while anchoring the defense. His presence alone alters game plans. He punishes defenders who play him straight, makes double teams pay with smart passes, controls the boards, and protects the rim with authority. His ability to stretch the floor forces defenders into constant adjustment, and his finishes swing momentum in an instant.
Luke’s impact is strengthened by the pieces around him, including his younger brother Tyler Sigmond. Tyler brings length, versatility, and growing confidence as a stretch guard who can shoot, attack mismatches, and disrupt defensively. His development continues to add flexibility to lineups, and his first career points against Alcoa marked another meaningful step forward.
On the wing, Julian has taken a clear leap. His scoring has risen from 4.8 points per game last season to 8.5 this year, fueled by confidence and trust in his shot. He spaces the floor, competes on the glass, and brings steady defensive effort while delivering in timely moments, while providing a strong defensive swagger and level of physicality and edge.
Payce Bradberry is the ultimate glue guy. A junior who hustles, defends, rebounds, and stays locked into his role, he keeps lineups balanced and effort high. His IQ, energy, and team-first approach allow others to thrive without disruption. Rarely making mistakes or turnovers.
JT Allen supplies physicality and stability in the frontcourt. His transformation from 195 pounds to 230 pounds reshaped his impact. He rebounds through contact, holds ground inside, and punishes mismatches while still stepping out comfortably. When rotations change, Maryville does not lose toughness or presence.
Development continues throughout the roster. Kai Stowers is expanding his wing game after growing up in the post, taking charges, rebounding, hitting the floor, and improving his ball handling. Will Luhn brings lethal shooting ability, with confidence growing toward becoming a consistent high percentage threat from deep. Every role matters. Every piece fits.
At the core of this group is faith. God comes first for this team. Love for Jesus Christ shapes how these players and coaches compete, prepare, respond, and care for one another. High character is not an accessory. It is the foundation. That shared belief fuels unity, resilience, and purpose on and off the floor.
Maryville is not chasing attention. This team is chasing a title. They know who they are, where they came from, and what the mission demands. They play for each other. They play for the jersey. And they are moving with intention toward something that can define this program forever.
I assess that Maryville possesses the balance, maturity, and internal trust required to handle postseason pressure. Their depth allows them to sustain intensity, their leadership steadies momentum swings, and their collective identity keeps them connected through adversity. These are the traits that separate contenders from champions.
Moving forward, expect Maryville to continue rising as the stakes climb. Their preparation, belief, and unity point toward a team capable of finishing the job. With clarity of purpose and conviction guiding every step, this team has the potential to turn opportunity into a state championship. Get your popcorn ready and buckle up, y'all, for a run to remember. Stay tuned.
