From the moment Trey Thompson and TN Impact lit up the court in Atlanta, it was clear this wasn’t your average up-and-coming player; this was a Man-Child in the making. With a fiery motor, massive frame, and electric energy, Trey demanded attention. He punished defenders in the paint with power, blew by them with speed, and rattled rims with grown-man dunks that ignited the crowd as he brought thunder. But what made him truly unguardable was the moment he confidently stepped beyond the arc and rained three straight threes in a game, something I told his dad I was watching for; everyone knew this kid wasn’t just good. He was special.
Trey’s game is the complete package. He’s a versatile, dynamic weapon as a three-level scorer who moves like a guard but punishes like a forward. With elite court vision and a high IQ, he doesn’t just play the game; he reads it like a seasoned vet. He creates chaos without needing the ball, always moving, always anticipating. He’s a mismatch nightmare who can absorb contact and still finish with finesse or fury. His transition game is explosive, and with his handles and vision, he’s just as dangerous pushing the break as he is finishing it. On the defensive end, he’s a menace. A natural shot blocker, relentless rebounder, and an instinctive help-side defender, Trey erases buckets before they even get to the rim. Chase-down blocks, blindside rejections, rim-rocking putbacks, this stud does it all. Gobbling boards like candy and swatting shots like it’s personal, he’s not just competing but dominating.
Trey capped his high school career as one of the top players in Tennessee, earning a 4-star national ranking and finishing with 2,227 points, 984 rebounds, and a 24.5 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 2.7 APG stat line in his final season. He ranked No. 1 in the state, No. 3 in Tennessee according to On3, and led Greeneville to a state tournament run that put his name on every recruiter’s radar. From dunk contests at 3SSB events to dropping dazzling dimes with the poise of a point guard, he built a national résumé filled with 22 dunks in nine AAU games and showed out at the NBPA Top 100 Camp.
And when it came to AAU ball, Trey made it personal. Every time TN Impact faced an EYBL squad, it was more than just a game, it statement time. Trey and his squad remained undefeated against them over the years, and each matchup brought out the best in him. He posted gaudy numbers, raised eyebrows, and proved again and again that rankings, circuits, and hype don’t mean a thing when the ball tips. Those battles were personal, and they propelled his game to an even higher level.
Then, on July 5, 2025, he made his boldest move yet, reclassifying to 2025 and committing to Iowa, bypassing his senior year to take on Big Ten basketball early. Offers from Tennessee, Purdue, Kansas, UConn, and more were on the table, but Iowa offered the right opportunity at the right time. “I’ll miss my teammates and the Greeneville community,” he shared. “But if I want to make the NBA, then I must do this.” Trey didn’t just chase the spotlight; he chose a fit where his game could shine with or without the ball in his hands. “If it’s pick-and-pop, transition, defense, I’ll bring versatility. Iowa’s getting a stretch, a rim protector, and a leader.”
But at the heart of it all, Trey’s decision and his rise weren’t made alone; his family has been the backbone of his entire journey. He poured his heart out about their role, and it was clear how deeply rooted that love runs. From every gym session to every big choice, they’ve been right there, offering guidance, holding him accountable, and reminding him of who he is beyond the player. “They helped me make the hard decisions and kept it straightforward with me throughout my basketball career,” Trey said. “Huge shoutout to them.” This wasn’t just his dream but theirs, too. Their support gave him the courage to take risks, to believe in himself, and to step boldly onto this next stage. What he’s doing isn’t just for him, it’s for every person who stood beside him when the cameras weren’t rolling.
That work ethic and emotional maturity set him apart. With faith, focus, and fire, he’s stayed locked in. “I just kept my head on straight and focused on one thing at a time.” His sense of humor still shines through. His advice to those after him is. “People should really work on what they’re weak at in the offseason, then focus on what they’re good at during the season. And get sunglasses, helps block out the haters!” 😎
And not just any sunglasses either, his sunglasses. You know the ones. If you’ve seen Trey stroll into a gym rocking that signature pair like he’s got courtside tickets to his own show, you know he’s locked in. There’s confidence, and then there’s Trey-with-the-shades-on confidence. Just know, if the glasses are on, you’re in trouble.
For Trey, this leap to Iowa isn’t just about playing early; it’s about chasing greatness. He’s stepping into one of the most physical conferences in college basketball as one of its youngest players, but he’s built for it. With his body, mindset, and skill set, he’s prepared to thrive. “I trust my work ethic,” he said. “If I keep working, there’s no ceiling.”
He’s already got eyes on the big picture, and the NBA lottery is not out of reach. Everything about Trey, from his game to his character, screams next level. He’s a humble giant with a team-first mentality, fierce competitive drive, and explosive ability on both ends of the floor. Greeneville may not get to see him rock the state tournament again, but the basketball world is about to witness something even bigger: the rise of a Man-Child built for the Big Ten and beyond.
I assess that Trey brings rare versatility to this college program. He can stretch the floor, protect the paint, lead the break, and defend multiple positions. His instincts, motor, and ability to adapt make him a true two-way threat. He’ll elevate his teammates, energize a locker room, and contribute to winning from day one.
Expect Trey to make noise as a freshman. His combination of physical tools, skill, and mentality gives him NBA-level potential. He’s not just a future pro but a future difference-maker. Give it two years, and the lottery may be calling. Stay tuned to see just how high he can fly.
