Gavin has made his senior season a fierce display of versatility, lining up at nearly every spot on defense and finding ways to make plays from each one. He takes pride in being able to do it all, whether he is stepping up against the run, getting into the backfield, or making a play on the ball.

Through six weeks, Gavin has 70 tackles, the most in D2, along with 3 tackles for loss, 5 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and 2 fumble recoveries. His team is 4-2, and he credits that production to studying each opponent’s offense and knowing his job in the game plan. He wants to keep playing with the same physicality each week.

That approach has been tested by a broken wrist and a dislocated thumb. Playing in a club was tough on Gavin mentally, but he refused to let it take the intensity out of his game. He worked to bring the same physical presence to every snap, even while dealing with the injuries.

Last season, Gavin earned all-conference honors as a defensive back, but being named a team captain means the most to him. He spent the offseason adding size and becoming a better athlete, and his goals this season are first-team all-conference honors and a playoff run. Gavin also wants to help turn Falls football into a winning program again after several difficult years.

As a play develops, Gavin trusts his instincts and keeps things simple. That lets him react quickly instead of getting caught thinking through every move. Coaches can expect him to fly to the ball and make his presence felt wherever he lines up.

I assess that Gavin’s willingness to take on different assignments gives his coaches plenty of ways to use him. His desire to bring Falls football back also shows how deeply he cares about the team wearing the same uniform.

Gavin has already put together a strong senior season, and his drive to reach higher gives it even more energy. He wants more from himself and more for his teammates, which makes every remaining game a chance to push that season further. Stay tuned.
