Poppes is a dynamic , dual threat scoring machine. He is a beautiful long range bomber, who possesses wicked handles and scary speed, that allows him to blow right past a defender. He is ruthless attacking the lane, constantly drawing a double team and sometimes even a triple team. However, that simply doesn’t work because he just dishes off a sweet pass to a teammate for an easy bucket. Pick your poison carefully! He has a very high game IQ, and is super poised and extremely shifty. He excels in transition and has a strong ability to finish through hard contact. He is willing to do things for the betterment of the team, and he is willing to make unselfish decisions. He is a true leader on the court.
This past season, he averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 assts, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Last season, he joined a league that hosts the best overall talent in all of Melbourne. Being just 15 years old, was going up against some players who were 23! He was literally the youngest player in the entire league, and will once again be one of the youngest players this upcoming season. This kid is beyond competitive and absolutely hates losing. He is working very hard to develop his leadership skills on the court, and being the Point Guard his team needs.
One thing I love about him is he truly gets fired up when one of his teammates gets a power dunk, slick steal or swatting a shot into the stands. He gets even more fired up when his team goes on a run and then the other team is forced to call a timeout to slow things down and catch their breath. That gets him hyped up and further fuels his energy level.
He has learned that not every game is going to go his team’s way and not every shot is going to go in. However, he believes in the work he has put in and he trusts in the process. He believes in his ability. He puts in the work and only focuses on what he is able to control. He always keeps a positive outlook and he plays with a strong confidence.
Poppes is a master defender, and is elite from both midrange and coming off screens. He also will rip down rebounds when necessary. He sees himself as absolutely having the ability to play at the next level, but he also understands that getting offers while playing internationally is not easy. He is really only looking for the opportunity to show a coach what he is capable of doing if he is just given the chance.
My personal assessment is he has high level talent, is poised, and he can make an absolute impact with any team that gives him the opportunity. He will be a steal for any program, who is going to dazzle fans with all he brings to any program. He is a true baller, who gets my stamp of approval, and he checks all the boxes. I will warn everyone not to judge a book by its cover based on his size. This kid can play basketball. Mark my words!
