Simmons is a lethal shooter on all three levels, who possesses unlimited range and a smooth release. He has a very high game IQ, with strong handles. He does a fantastic job at attaacting close outs, and he can make quick decisions to either score, or dish the rock to the open man. Defensively, he is quick on his feet, with fast hands, which allows him to stay in front of his man and explode into passing lanes for easy steals. He is also a tenacious off ball defender, who will always be in the right spots. Last, but definitely not least, he is vocal leader and floor coach for his team.
This past season, he averaged 14.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 58 % fg and a blistering 46% from 3 point land. This kid definitely had to put in the work to show that he belongs, and he did just that. His goals now are to try to be seen by as many college coaches as possible.
Playing AAU for DC United u17, he really showcased his athleticism and he was a relentless finisher. He knows that it is imperative to be able to finish on larger, stronger opponents, so that is what motivates him to work like a dog.
This kid is always looking to improve. He is always looking to get better. It doesn’t matter how good he gets or how much he accomplishes, until his basketball career is over, it will never be enough for him. He said even if he was the best player in the world, that burning desire inside him to get better would still be there, and he would never stop working to become the best player he can be.
He holds himself to a very high standard, and he realizes that if you're never facing any challenges, then there would be no reason for you to need to get better. One thing I immediately noticed about him is that he is extremely coachable. Far too often, you see a diva who knows it all, and doesn’t want to hear anything from anyone. That is most definitely NOT the case with Simmons. That high game IQ allows him to pick up changes, schemes and plays very quickly. He is a team first kid, which is actually quite refreshing to see in today’s game.
His dream is to play at the next level, and he is willing to do all the little things that most people aren't willing to do. My personal assessment is his shooting ability is through the roof, and he possessed the size to impact the game at the next level, quite effectively. That hunger and passion to improve everyday is a mindset that leads to greatness. Sprinkle in the leadership and that defensive swagger, and there truly is no limit to how high this kid can fly.
