Isaly is an explosive, floor general who is extremely athletic. I simply can not believe just how much this kid has improved over the past year. He now commands the offense, while leaving his mark on every game he plays in. When the game is on the line, you want the ball in his hands. Period. He consistently hits his shots, from anywhere on the court, fights for rebounds and is a stingy defender. He has become a vocal leader and coach on the floor. He possesses a very high game IQ, has nice court vision and can thread the needle with slick passes to open or cutting teammates.
This past season, he averaged 8.6 points while shooting a blistering 51% from the floor adding 4.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game as he led his team to a 21-4 overall record. His team lost in the State Quarterfinals, and this left a very bad taste in his mouth. He is eager to run it back this season, and do everything in his power to not let history repeat itself. He earned 2nd Team WV AA All-State and 1st Team All Conference. This upcoming season is his last at the high school level, and I expect even bigger honors for this dynamo.
What stands out to me the most as far as his improvements are undoubtedly his perimeter game from both mid-range and three point range (40% on the season). The tougher the competition he faced, the better he played. He took center stage, often drawing the opposing team’s best player and he simply shut him down. He plays with a fire inside of him that is immensely contagious.
He played this past Spring AAU season with KY Vision Elite, where his 17u team has been a part of the Prelude 32 Circuit and he has also played in several Made Hoops events, where he averaged 12 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals per game.
In summer League with Williamstown HS, he played in the Marietta College Shootout and the Morgantown HS Shootout. Both shootouts featured some of the best competition in all of Ohio and West Virginia. Many of the teams he played against had much larger school enrollment size, which obviously allows them to choose from a much larger talent pool, however his team finished with an impressive 5-2 overall record.
When I asked him what his biggest goal is for this upcoming season, without hesitation he said “Plain and simple, win a state championship.” As of right now, he has an offer from Oberlin College, and several other schools are showing an interest in him including Denison, MIT, Mount Union, Washington & Lee, Marietta College, Eastern Kentucky, Hillsdale College, and Washington & Jefferson College. He wants to attend a school where he can achieve both a solid education, while also being able to continue to play the game he loves so much.
Yall this stud will be playing in Live Period July 11th-14th in Augusta ,GA . This is a must see performane as seeing is believing. Cruz wont disappoint.
The development I have personally witnessed with this kid can only be categorized as a literal transformation. It is absolutely amazing to see just how very far he has come, and how much he has improved in all facets of his game. He has that DOG in him, with a relentless work ethic and all that hard work has completely paid off.. His growth and maturity off the court is equally impressive. His overall game IQ has grown to match his amazing skillset and God given natural raw talent. I always knew he was athletic from the very first time I ever saw him play, but now this kid is playing on a whole other level. In my opinion, this upcoming season is going to be quite a big one for him. He is playing with a fervid confidence and intense swagger. He has finally become comfortable in his own skin, while also making those around him better as well. I will be keeping a very close eye on this kid!
