Wilson is a dynamic Point Guard who is an absolute nightmare matchup for any opponent. He has incredible court vision and a very high game IQ. He is a prolific triple threat scoring option with a hair trigger shot and super slick, crafty handles. One minute he is blowing past you, and the next minute he pulls up, after stopping on a dime, and he makes it rain from three point land. He has an incredible vertical which enables him to elevate over defenders. He is ruthless, getting downhill quickly and fiercely driving hard to and attacking the rim. You want to double him? He will hit a no look pass that makes your jaw drop and eyes get wide. He can also rip rebounds out of the air, and he plays very stingy defense, often stealing the ball and going on the fast break. Once this kid locks in, there simply isn’t a better defender in the entire state.
This past season he averaged 19.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game. Last season, his team failed to qualify for the state tourney and that left him with a very bad taste in his mouth. That loss motivated him to work even harder to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself. One game last season, his team played against the team who would go on to win state, and Wilson scored 47 points, shooting 10/14 from 3 point land, had 7 assists, a bunch of steals, and 4 rebounds. The fact that he was capable of doing that against the state champions really boosted his confidence. His biggest goal for this upcoming season is for his team to make a serious run at that state title. He knows it won’t be easy considering the level of talent that will be in his bracket, but he welcomes that challenge with open arms.
Playing AAU with both Select and Built4Ball last season, he put in a ton of work to improve in all facets of his overall gam, in an effort to be even better when his high school senior year rolls around. He knows that this is his very last season of high school basketball, so it is win now. There is no next season.
One thing I truly love about this kid is you can’t rattle him with trash talk. All trash talking him does is fire him up and ignite a fire deep down inside of him. Nothing makes him more happy than taking a hostile crowd, in a heated environment and listen to them go literally silent. Like any athlete in any sport, he has been bitten by the injury bug and he also had to come back after being involved in a car accident.
He told me one story that really stuck with me, that I will share. His first game on Varsity as a Freshman, he was named a starter. He said he shot terribly in that game, and it was eating him up inside. However, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he asked his coach if he could stay in the gym and he would leave when he was done practicing, which his coach allowed. He stayed in that gym all alone, worked out until about 2am, took a little break, fell asleep and woke up the next morning in that same gym! Nothing has changed folks. There is a couch in one of the back offices in his high school, where he sleeps when he needs to. He is the living definition of a “gym rat.”
When asked what a coach can expect from him, he said “I have a 24/7 motor that never stops. I have an intense work ethic, and a high court IQ.” He personally feels that it is his job to make every player around him better, whether that be during drills, during practice or during games. He self admits he isn’t going to bully larger players, but folks, once he gets you leaning one way, or getting you to leave your feet off one of his shot fakes, you’re done. Period.
He is receiving some major attention from several D1 schools, and before committing to any coach, he really wants to make sure that whichever school he ends up choosing, that there is a strong connection between him, the program, his future teammates and his future coaching staff.
My personal assessment is that this kid is a flat out baller and he has D1 talent and a D1 work ethic. He plays with a relentless competitiveness, extreme confidence and an intense swagger. He is never satisfied just “competing.” No. This kid wants to completely “dominate.” The bigger the stage, the more pressure there is, the more he dials in!
Stay tuned!
