Every time Colton steps on the floor, the pressure instantly rises because his explosive downhill game, dangerous shooting range, and relentless defensive energy create problems all over the court. Defenders cannot back off because he can light it up from deep, but crowding him only opens the door for him to attack the rim off the bounce with speed, athleticism, and toughness. What makes Colton such a difficult matchup is the mentality he brings every possession because he will do whatever it takes to win. While many scorers focus mostly on offense, Colton takes pride in locking up the opposing team’s best player defensively and battling to shut them down while still carrying a huge offensive load himself. You can watch film on him and build a game plan around slowing down his scoring, but his motor, competitiveness, and defensive fire still create another battle teams have to deal with all game long.
That mentality fueled a huge junior season where Colton helped lead his team to a 23-6 record and a conference championship while averaging 24.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 50.9 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from three while constantly creating momentum-changing plays on both ends of the floor. The season demanded consistency every night, and that became one of the biggest battles mentally because the goal never changed, regardless of the opponent. Every game required the same hunger, focus, and drive to win. Winning Conference Player of the Year, Wright County Player of the Year, and becoming a 1,000-point scorer made those long hours and sacrifices even more meaningful, because those are the moments every kid dreams about growing up loving basketball.
Now competing with MN Fury 17U-Zurn, Colton continues to elevate his game while thriving in a team culture that truly feels like family. The chemistry, trust, and competitiveness within the program have helped push everybody to another level, and Colton has embraced every second of it. He believes the family atmosphere inside Fury is not just something talked about publicly, but something that is truly required throughout the program. That connection has helped make the AAU experience even stronger while allowing him to continue competing at a high level against top talent.
One of the toughest things Colton battled through this year was staying mentally steady through every high and low while continuing to show up every night with the same hunger and drive. He learned the importance of never getting too high or too low emotionally because long seasons test players mentally just as much as physically. That maturity has helped elevate his leadership and consistency tremendously while allowing him to stay focused on winning above everything else.
The biggest improvement in Colton’s game has been his shooting because he put major emphasis on becoming dangerous from everywhere on the floor. Countless reps and hours in the gym have added another weapon to his offensive attack because defenders now have to respect his range at all times while still trying to stop him downhill. He continues putting heavy focus on getting shots up and becoming even more dangerous offensively heading into next season and beyond.
Looking ahead, coaches can expect a fierce competitor who gives everything he has to the program, embraces hard defensive assignments, and attacks the game with nonstop energy and passion. Whether it is scoring, defending, leading, sacrificing for the team, or diving fully into the culture of a program, Colton brings the type of fire that impacts winning every single night because of how much he genuinely loves the game.
I assess that Colton Purcell is an explosive two-way guard whose scoring ability, defensive toughness, and relentless competitiveness make him extremely valuable in winning basketball. His ability to pressure defenses off the bounce while stretching the floor with his shooting creates matchup problems constantly. Add in his willingness to defend the opposing team’s top player, and his impact becomes even bigger.
Moving forward, Colton has the tools and mentality to continue rising as a dangerous all-around guard capable of changing games with scoring, energy, and toughness. As his shooting and overall offensive confidence continue growing, his ceiling keeps climbing because defenses already struggle containing his speed and aggressiveness attacking the basket. His leadership, competitive fire, and commitment to winning continue setting him apart every time the lights get brighter. Colton is must-see TV. Stay tuned, y'all.
