Electric, fearless, and relentless, Cooper Kraus is the definition of a blue-collar warrior who transforms every snap into a battlefield. The inside linebacker explodes downhill with fierce intent, powered by a high football IQ and a never-ending hunger. He is dynamic in pursuit, diagnosing plays with masterful pre-snap reads, then punishing ball carriers with fearless physicality. Whether blowing up a gap, chasing sideline-to-sideline, or making clutch stops at the goal line, Cooper is a relentless enforcer whose presence electrifies his teammates and terrifies opponents.
Last season, Kraus led his entire region with 93 total tackles, a dominant mix of 40 solos and 53 assists with 15 tackles for loss, 7 pass breakups, 9 hurries, 3 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown. This year, he wasted no time making noise. In a heated rivalry win against Cienega, he erupted for 10 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 TFL, and 3 hurries, anchoring a defensive stand that held their opponent to just 50 rushing yards on 31 attempts. In the game’s defining moment, Cooper delivered four straight goal-line stops, an explosive sequence where he and his brothers in blue shut the door at the one-yard line.
For Cooper, the mindset going into that game knowing it would be a dogfight, but he trusted his dawgs were better. “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” he says. Mentally prepared, he was determined to play with discipline and bad intentions, making every play he could and doing his part. When sudden change hit after a bad snap on a punt, Cooper locked in on his keys and reacted. The sequence unfolded fast, but for him, it felt like slow motion. On first down, safety JT filled hard, giving Cooper a clean shot on the backside. On second down, his brother Jax filled strong, and the two smacked the RB at the line. On third down, corner Tariq Howard set the edge, funneling the ball inside where Cooper came downhill to clean it up. Finally, on fourth down, he filled, cut back to the RB’s legs, and outside backer TJ Walker stoned him. Game over at the one-yard line, a fierce stand built on trust and execution.
That moment showcased what fuels Cooper most, his brotherhood. He’s grown up with the same teammates since he was five, and the bond they’ve built is unshakable. “We feed off each other,” he explains. “One makes a big play, and it’s like we all made it. The fire grows.” That unity has carried them through comebacks, neck-and-neck battles, and clutch situations. Their energy builds with every snap, and Cooper’s leadership makes sure the flame never dies when the game is on the line.
Bigger, faster, and stronger than ever, Kraus has also elevated his pass coverage. Thriving in both zone and man, his ability to study film and make triangle reads allows him to consistently be around the ball. His football IQ, shaped since he was five years old, comes from reading guards, backs, and linemen instantly. That selfless, detail-driven approach makes him more than a tackling machine; it makes him a tone-setter.
Looking ahead, Cooper knows his toughest tests are still to come. Buena has one of the hardest schedules in Arizona 5A, and he expects a dogfight every week. “This will make us playoff-ready. We’ll be battle-tested,” he says. He’s also focused on personal growth, improving conditioning, staying disciplined, and ensuring he gets better every game. For the defense, the goal is, no one runs the ball on them, and the standard is raised every week.
The message he wants every opponent to hear is loud and clear is, “Most of our opponents think we’re just hillbillies down here in Sierra Vista. But we’re bringing that Hillbilly Hammer every game. Don’t sleep on us, we’ll hammer you.”
Cooper has the rare ability to impact a program immediately with his physical brand of football, unmatched IQ, and brotherhood-driven fire. His consistent tackling, disruptive presence in the box, and improved coverage make him a coach’s dream at linebacker. With his discipline, leadership, and fearless playmaking, the Hillbilly Hammer is only going to swing harder at the next level.
Kraus’s physicality and high-level football IQ combine to make him an instant difference-maker for any college defense. His ability to read plays before they develop, punish ball carriers with force, and contribute in pass coverage gives him the versatility to thrive in multiple schemes. His leadership and brotherhood-first mentality ensure that he will not only deliver production but elevate the entire unit around him.
As he continues to elevate his conditioning, speed, and discipline, Cooper is set to build on already dominant performances. Expect high-volume tackling, game-changing stops, and relentless effort every time he steps on the field. His ceiling remains extremely high, and with his fire and toughness, he projects as a centerpiece defender capable of anchoring a college front seven for years to come.
