Jake can glide behind his blockers, spot a crease, and make his move before a defender has time to close it. The Spencer County running back has a smooth feel for the ground game, but there's plenty of fire when it's time to attack straight ahead. Put him in the slot, send him out for a pass or give him a shot in the return game, and he's ready to make something happen. Jake knows what a defense is trying to take away, and he enjoys finding the answer that helps his team.
That mix of vision and toughness has led to a monster season. Jake has rushed for 1,294 yards and scored 21 total touchdowns, with 19 on the ground, one on a kick return and one on a catch. His 1,665 all-purpose yards show how much damage he can do whenever the ball finds him. He is second in Kentucky in rushing and tied for first in touchdowns, a wild spot for a player who still wants more. Over his time at Spencer County, he has piled up 3,441 rushing yards and 49 total TDs.
Jake's growth goes deeper than the numbers. He went from 178 to 185 pounds while dropping two percentage points of body fat, giving him more strength without losing the smooth movement that makes him dangerous. Three years in the Bears' offense have sharpened his understanding of where a play can open, and he gives the coaching staff credit for teaching him how to see it. He can wait for a block to develop, snap into a cut, and finish with a fierce edge when a defender meets him.
The wins have meant just as much to Jake as his personal milestones. Beating crosstown rival Collins gave Spencer County a moment to celebrate, while taking down Franklin County for only the second time in school history showed what this team can do together. People have doubted the Bears because they run the Wing T, but Jake and his teammates have answered by beating teams with more modern offenses. They believe in what they do, and every win gives that belief more fuel.
Jake built much of his game in the weight room, which has made him stronger, while working on his side-to-side movement has given him another way to escape traffic. Playing seven-on-seven has helped him study defensive looks from a different angle and find weak spots before the snap. He's thinking about how to beat a defender with his mind as well as his body, then putting that work to use when the ball is in his hands.
The Bears have big plans for the rest of the season. Jake wants to reach 2,000 rushing yards and help take Spencer County to Kroger Field for the first time. His fire comes from the guys beside him and a community where one county rallies behind one school. That bond means something to him, and he wants every run to give his teammates and everyone cheering for the Bears another reason to believe.
I assess that Jake has a knack for making a defender commit before he shows his real path. His timing lets him turn a small opening into a clean lane, and that instinct should keep making life difficult for teams trying to crowd the line.
Spencer County has a player who wants the biggest games with his teammates, and that hunger can lift the whole group as the postseason gets closer. His willingness to take on whatever job the Bears need gives them a powerful way to stay dangerous when the stakes rise. Stay tuned.
