Walker Valley HS, TN

Cason Cunningham makes defenders pay for rushing past the play. The Walker Valley senior is a patient, shifty back who trusts his eyes, lets his blocks develop, and finds the crease before planting his foot and going. Give him a narrow lane, and he can turn it into a big run. Meet him in tight quarters, and he has the quick feet to make a defender miss without losing his path upfield. His vision, quickness, and fierce motor give the offense an electric threat every time he touches the ball.

That same motor shows up when Cason doesn’t have the ball. He takes pass protection seriously, looks for the defender he needs to pick up, and runs down on kickoff ready to make a tackle. He wants his team to trust him with the jobs that help win a game, whether anyone watching notices them or not. For Cason, being a complete back means protecting his quarterback and helping on special teams just as much as finding room to run.

Cason has piled up 1,139 all-purpose yards without counting return yards, scored 14 touchdowns, and made 12 special teams tackles. Those numbers carry plenty of weight when defenses are watching him closely after his all-state season last year. He's learned to take what they give him, trust an offensive line he credits for its work, and wait for the right lane. Walker Valley is 8–1 overall and 5–0 in region play, giving this team a strong position heading toward the end of the regular season. Cason knows they can't get comfortable now. He wants the team to clean up the little things in practice, stay healthy, and play its best football when November arrives.

The biggest improvement in Cason’s game has come from slowing the play down in his mind while keeping his feet ready to go. Last season, he sometimes tried to bounce a run outside before the blocking had a chance to develop. Now he presses the hole, reads what opens, and makes his cut with purpose, passion, and intent. He's stronger when a defender gets a hand on him, and his work against blitzes has made him more dependable when the quarterback needs help. That growth has given his quickness more purpose because he's choosing his lane instead of trying to force one.

Earning all-state recognition showed Cason that his work was paying off, but the team moments have stayed with him too. Last year’s first-round playoff win meant a great deal because he'd never advanced past that point during his high school years. Now, as a senior, he's part of a Walker Valley team that has gone unbeaten in region play and has more football it wants to win. His first college offer gave him another moment he will not forget. It showed him that the chance to keep playing after high school was becoming real.

Cason has heard for years that he's too small to play running back in college. He's never felt the need to win that argument with words. He answers it by making defenders miss, fighting through contact, and showing coaches how much he can do on the field. Every carry and every snap on special teams gives him another chance to show that his game deserves to be seen.

He spent the offseason getting stronger and more explosive in the weight room so he could handle contact and break more tackles. He also put time into his footwork, ball security, and catching out of the backfield. That work matters on game day because he wants to give Walker Valley more ways to use him and more reasons to trust him when the game is tight.

The preparation continues when Cason watches film on his own. He studies how defenses line up and what linebackers tend to do, then checks the safeties and the defenders near the line before the snap. If pressure is coming, he wants to know which defender is his to pick up. When the ball reaches his hands, he has often spotted where the lane could open. A coach can expect that preparation, full-speed play, and a back willing to take on any job that gives his team a better chance to win.

The doubts about his size still fuel Cason every time he steps on the field, but there's more behind his drive than proving people wrong. He plays to give God the glory, to make his family proud, and to fight for his teammates. He's hungry for the chance to keep playing football after high school, and he wants to make the most of every snap Walker Valley has left this season.

Cason’s patience and vision make his quick feet especially dangerous. He can wait for a block, spot a cutback lane, and change direction without wasting steps. When a defender closes in, his ability to make that defender miss gives a run another chance to grow. His willingness to handle protection and kickoff coverage adds real value to Walker Valley because the team can count on him in more than one part of the game.

Cason brings a dynamic mix of sharp reads, sudden cuts, and toughness through contact. His improved strength helps him finish runs, while his catching work gives him another way to contribute to an offense. He plays with the instincts to find an opening and the competitive fire to make something happen once he gets there. That combination gives Cason the potential to keep making a strong impact as his football journey continues.
