"LANCE AKRIDGE THE FORCE FUELING A FAITH DRIVEN STARS REVOLUTION"

This Coaches Corner spotlight dives into the heart of a program built on something deeper, stronger, and far more powerful than basketball alone. This is the story of STARS Basketball Club, a ministry and mission wrapped in the structure of a sports organization, standing apart because it offers something far beyond wins and losses. This is where faith becomes the foundation, leadership becomes the language, and basketball becomes the bridge.

At the center of this mission is Lance Akridge, a leader shaped long before he ever stepped into the grassroots basketball world. Growing up in a Christian household set the stage, but the defining shift came in 1997 when he gave his life to Christ. What seemed like a small decision, agreeing to coach a youth team in an Upward Basketball League, became the spark that forever redirected his path. That single choice opened the door to sports ministry, revealing a powerful connection between the game and the endless life lessons woven through it. From that moment forward, God made Lance’s mission clear, use basketball to change lives.

Lance’s journey stretched from Nashville to Kentucky as he balanced careers, served as a CPA, and helped run a long-standing family business. Yet the call to ministry never dimmed. In 2004, Lance stepped into full-time sports ministry with Upward Sports. In 2011, Upward launched its club sports model and asked him to lead the effort in Nashville. And when Upward later discontinued club sports in 2019, they didn't shut the door; they handed Lance the keys. With their support, he transitioned into what is now STARS Basketball Club, forming its own 501 (c) (3) and keeping the mission unchanged: Planting Seeds for Christ Through Basketball. The colors shifted. The logo evolved. But the calling stayed exactly the same.

Lance believes nothing is more important than impacting young athletes for Christ, producing champions on the court and in life. Sports are the vehicle, but Christ is the anchor. The message is everywhere, God desires to be their Head Coach for life. STARS is not just basketball; it is mentorship, discipleship, character building, and transformation.

That is the why, that is the heartbeat, and that mission matters because Lance has seen firsthand what intentional leadership and faith can do in a young person’s life. It is his testimony tied to his purpose, a purpose he lives every day.

Building an environment where faith, academics, and athletic development thrive together requires structure, clarity, and relentless commitment. It starts with the mission statement and a daily push toward a Discipline of Excellence for Christ. But the true engine behind STARS is Lance’s leadership within the coaching staff. These are transformational leaders who buy into the MORE THAN culture, who show athletes through their actions what it means to carry themselves with purpose, and who understand the power they hold as role models.

Behind the scenes, Lance pours into them continuously. Culture is not one speech or one meeting, it is a constant drip. Coaches are reminded year-round of the mission, the responsibility, and the opportunity they have to plant seeds that last long after the last whistle. Multiple coaching meetings, intentional focus, and shared commitment ensure the message stays alive.

STARS functions on three major pillars, spiritual development, academic responsibility, and athletic excellence. The off-court work is not optional; it is foundational. Through practices, camps, and clinics, coaches have delivered approximately 4,000 character lessons over the past five years. These lessons tie Scripture to real life, covering topics like teamwork, wisdom, leadership, effort, perseverance, courage, commitment, integrity, and service. This is the transformation piece. This is where kids learn who they are beyond the scoreboard.

In a world reshaped by NIL, the transfer portal, and constant shifts in recruiting, Lance keeps STARS grounded by never drifting from its identity. The mission leads, excellence follows, and consistency attracts. Families return because they feel cared for. Athletes come because they trust the process. Top players join because greatness draws greatness.

The program’s reach has exploded because STARS consistently delivers quality, quality coaching, quality experiences, and quality relationships. Great coaches retain great players. Great players attract other great players. That formula, along with dependable structure and clear purpose, has elevated STARS onto regional and national platforms every season.

And the results speak loudly.

But the road has not been without adversity. The toughest season came in 2020. COVID threatened everything: connection, finances, momentum, and stability. But through innovation, God’s provision, strong leadership, and wise stewardship, Lance guided STARS through the storm and out stronger on the other side. It became a testimony of resilience, faith, and unity.

Today, when a young athlete walks into STARS for the first time, Lance’s goal is that they should immediately feel a transformational environment, not a transactional one. Regardless of talent level or grade, every athlete is valued. Every athlete matters. Every athlete is loved.

And when that athlete moves on, Lance hopes they take one truth with them.

God desires to be their Head Coach for life.

That message is the foundation. The rest, including skills, character, discipline, and leadership, are tools they can carry with them forever.

To the young dreamers chasing the next level, Lance’s message is, Dreams are good, but dreams do not work unless you do. Love the game. Invest time in the gym. Surround yourself with great mentors. And lock in academically.

To parents searching for the right program, Lance offers not just basketball, but a trustworthy home. Quality coaching. Positive role models. Organization. Communication. And the big one that makes STARS special, Planting Seeds for Christ Through Basketball.

And finally, what Lance wants the world to understand is this. Young athletes need programs like STARS now more than ever. Today’s youth face challenges, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and cultural pressure. They need guidance. They need structure. They need love. They need people who remind them that God loves them no matter what, and that life is all about relationships, loving God, and loving others.

STARS Basketball Club stands as that light. A beacon of hope. A sanctuary for growth. A home where basketball becomes a tool for life change.

This is not just a program. It is a mission. It is a calling. And Lance Akridge is the steady hand that keeps the light shining.
