Caleb Marshall enters every game with a competitor's mentality and the confidence that he can battle with anybody standing on the other side. His elite shooting immediately demands attention, but stopping there misses everything he's worked relentlessly to add to his arsenal. Caleb can score at all three levels, attack off the bounce, get into his middy bag, and finish at the rim with either hand. His desire to win is at the heart of it all, giving every skill he's developed a purpose beyond just scoring.
His summer with the Stars in UAA play gave Caleb a chance to unleash that offensive firepower against good competition, and the final numbers were lethal. He averaged 18 points while ranking fourth in UAA scoring and posted a blistering 67 percent true shooting percentage that ranked second among the top 100 scorers. Another number tells just how efficient that scoring attack was, as Caleb produced 1.20 points per possession, placing him second among the UAA 16U offensive efficiency leaders who used more than 12 possessions per game in more than eight games. That combination of production and efficiency showed he could pour in points without wasting possessions or forcing his offense.
Those numbers were fueled by far more than Caleb raining in threes. The balance within his offensive attack continued coming together. Catch-and-shoot ability is one of his calling cards, but defenders who charge at him expecting nothing beyond the jumper can quickly find themselves dealing with his attack off the bounce. His middy arsenal includes a floater that he can release from roughly 14 feet, giving him another answer when defenders protect the rim or chase him off the perimeter. He was still dealing with soreness afterward, but the chance to compete against a loaded group of talent mattered enough for him to play and test himself. That performance said a lot about his mentality. He wanted the challenge even without feeling completely healthy, and he responded by showing exactly why his scoring ability has earned attention.
The biggest improvement in Caleb's game can be found in the physical work he's attacked during recent months. He has added 15 pounds through dedication in the weight room, becoming stronger, quicker, and bouncier while continuing to sharpen his basketball skills. That added strength can help him absorb contact on drives, battle defensively, and bring more power into his finishes without taking away from the smooth touch that makes his jumper so dangerous.
The most underrated part of his game is his ball-handling, especially for anyone who watches Caleb torch the nets and immediately sees him as only a shooter. He also believes his ability to analyze what's happening on the floor deserves more attention because he has a knack for seeing things develop before they fully unfold. That feel helps him recognize defensive movement, find an attack point, or understand where something is opening before everyone else catches it. Caleb wants to sharpen that awareness even further because combining basketball IQ with his expanding skill set gives him another way to control possessions.
The grind behind the scenes shows why so many areas of Caleb's game continue growing. His goal is four strong lifting days while understanding recovery is important for building his body, but shooting work is an almost daily commitment. Caleb begins close to the basket with form shooting before gradually extending his range, piling up repetitions while making sure his mechanics remain sharp. He spends several days each week working through ball-handling drills in a dedicated area at home, practices difficult finishes with both hands, and works with local trainers who continue pushing his development.
Film study adds another layer to that preparation because Caleb isn't only interested in improving through physical repetitions. He spends time with coaches breaking down quality teams and talented players, searching for details that can expand the way he understands basketball. That commitment to studying the game fits perfectly with his natural ability to analyze what's 1happening during live action, giving him a chance to strengthen the mental side while his body and skills continue developing.
Caleb's offseason focus has touched every part of his game, from becoming a better shooter and ball handler to strengthening his understanding of basketball. Defense has received major attention because he wants to become a lockdown presence who can make life difficult for whoever he's guarding. He isn't satisfied with being feared because of his jumper while giving anything back defensively, and that hunger to become a complete two-way weapon has added another edge to his preparation.
His goals for the upcoming season are things his team can accomplish together. With a new coach, new faces, returning experience, and the return of a talented teammate who missed most of last season with an injury, Caleb believes the ingredients are there for something special. As one of the leaders, he wants to help bring everyone together, establish chemistry, and push the team to become everything it's capable of becoming. Individual production will always have its place, but winning remains the prize that matters most to him.
Any coach putting Caleb on the floor can expect a fierce competitor who will empty the tank.
