"From Doubt to Fire: The Run That Changed Everything"

Wayne HS, WV

There’s something different about a player who doesn’t flinch when things fall apart early, who sees the storm, feels the pressure, hears the noise, and still stays locked in, and that’s exactly what Colton brought to this Wayne squad as a fearless scoring threat with a steady presence who became one of the driving forces behind a season that flipped completely and turned intoan historic run. A smooth offensive weapon who can light it up when the moment calls for it, while also embracing the gritty side of the game by rebounding, defending, and doing whatever it takes to win, and that balance is what made him so dangerous and so valuable every step of the way.

The season didn’t start the way anyone expected as losses stacked up, frustration crept in, and a 6 game skid tested everything about this team, but while others might have folded Colton stayed grounded, believed in his teammates, trusted the work, and never let the early struggles shake his focus, and that mindset became contagious as instead of breaking this team started building.

The turning point came when Wayne knocked off Buffalo Putnam, a ranked squad that forced people to take notice, and at the same time the return of Kaiden Hayton gave them a presence inside and added leadership that steadied everything, and that’s when belief became real as the pieces started fitting, the energy shifted, and Wayne went from hoping to competing with confidence.

Trust became the foundation as the ball started moving, teammates trusted each other instead of pressing, execution tightened up, and that stretch turned into a winning streak that carried straight into regionals and into the state tournament, as what once looked uncertain became real momentum.

Colton averaged 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 52.4 percent from the field with a 52.9 percent effective field goal percentage, adding 1.3 steals per game across 30 minutes per game, and he didn’t chase numbers, he tightened everything up by locking in defensively, hitting the boards, staying disciplined with his shot selection, and focusing on free throws knowing those moments would matter late, and instead of trying to do too much he did exactly what was needed while impacting both ends and keeping winning at the center of everything.

The adversity early on became fuel as it forced accountability and leadership, and Colton stepped into that role, especially for the younger guys, by showing them how to respond, how to stay together, and how to fight through it, and that stretch didn’t break Wayne but elevated them as it built toughness, belief, and a team that refused to quit.

Then came history as Wayne made its first state tournament appearance ever, not handed and not expected but earned, and for Colton, that moment meant everything because playing in the Civic Center was a dream come true, but more than that, it was proof of resilience, growth, and belief in what this team had built together.

And when the lights got brightest, Colton didn’t hesitate as he dropped 21 points in the opening game against Doddridge County while staying calm, composed, and locked in, letting the game come to him and trusting the work that had been put in all season, showing that performance wasn’t random but the result of everything coming together at the right time.

Then came the semifinals against defending and eventual state champion Wheeling Central and Colton elevated again with 29 points, playing aggressive, fearless, and confident without backing down or second guessing, attacking every opportunity and proving he belonged on that stage with anyone, fueled by the trust of his teammates and his own belief as he embraced the moment instead of shying away from it.

Wayne’s run ended in the semifinals, but what they built will last far beyond one season as a team that went from a 6-game losing streak to a historic run flipped everything, and Colton was right at the center of that transformation with his All-State Tournament Team honor reflecting impact, growth, and a player who showed up when it mattered most.

Now as his senior chapter closes Colton stands at a crossroads as he continues exploring opportunities to further his education and keep playing the game he loves or step into a career path with purpose, but no matter what comes next what he helped build will not be forgotten by his teammates, his coaches, or the community that watched this run unfold because this wasn’t just a season, it was a statement, and Colton Heck made sure his voice was heard.

I assess that Colton brings a scoring punch that shows up when the stakes rise, along with a willingness to handle the gritty work that wins games, and his ability to stay composed under pressure, paired with his growth into a leader, makes him more than just a scorer as he impacts both ends and understands how to operate within a team.

If Colton pursued the next level had the potential to be a guard who can provide offense while fitting into a system that values effort and discipline, and his confidence in big moments combined with his team first mindset gives him a chance to earn trust early, and with continued physical development and consistency he has the potential to grow into a reliable contributor who can swing momentum and bring energy to a program.
