Before there was the TN Tigers, there was Chip Smith, a young man with an unshakable love for the game and a hunger to keep learning. That passion carried him from his days as a walk-on at UT Martin, where he was part of a Gulf South Conference championship and NCAA Tournament team, to working college basketball camps across the South. Those summers of study and sweat lit a lifelong fire to teach the game. His devotion to growth led him to an opportunity to serve as a Graduate Assistant under the legendary Bobby Knight at Indiana, arranged by family friend and Tennessee coaching icon Ray Mears. But as life would have it, God’s timing shaped a different path. Engaged to his future wife, Chip chose faith, family, and patience over fast success—trusting that the right doors would open in time. Years later, those doors led him to over 300 high school wins and one of the most respected grassroots programs in the South.
Chip’s decision to follow God’s plan instead of chasing prestige became a defining moment of his life. Through prayer and patience, he learned that true fulfillment comes from faith, not fame. That same belief now pulses through every aspect of the TN Tigers organization. To Chip, basketball is more than a sport, but a platform for purpose. Every success, every connection, every breakthrough is rooted in the belief that God’s timing and direction are perfect. The TN Tigers stand on that spiritual foundation, teaching players not just how to compete, but how to live with integrity, humility, and faith.
He joined the TN Tigers in 2006, stepping into a program built by greats like Mark Miller, Frank Miller, Drew Maddux, and Cleve Smith. He took over an 8th-grade team that would become a powerhouse Class of 2010 group and later inherited the entire organization when its original leaders moved on. What began as an opportunity to coach a single team evolved into a calling to lead a movement, one that now helps kids across Tennessee chase their dreams with discipline, teamwork, and belief.
Ask Chip the secret behind the Tigers’ continued dominance, and he’ll tell you, there isn’t one. There’s only commitment. The program looks for players who aren’t just talented but tough, resilient, and willing to handle hard better. Tigers are taught to play selflessly, to embrace discomfort, and to give everything for the name on the front of their jersey. Whether they’re ranked or overlooked, Chip demands one thing: relentless effort and buy-in to the process.
While basketball is the vehicle, the mission runs much deeper. The TN Tigers’ heartbeat is built around loving players as individuals first. Chip preaches accountability, resilience, and family, values that extend far beyond the court. Win or lose, every player knows they’re loved. Every lesson learned on the court translates to life beyond it. The goal isn’t just to create great basketball players; it’s to help build great men.
Over the years, countless lives have been changed through the TN Tigers program. The stories go far beyond trophies and stats, but stories of young men who overcame loss, hardship, and doubt because they found someone who believed in them. Chip’s voice carries far beyond the sideline. His players often become family, returning years later to mentor, coach, or simply reconnect. The first Tiger class of 2010 still has an active group chat, now filled with wedding photos, baby announcements, and messages encouraging Chip to keep it going for the Class of 2043.
In an era of NIL deals, transfer portals, and constant movement, Chip stays grounded in what has always worked-relationships. He understands that today’s recruiting world is tougher for high school athletes, so the Tigers leverage their proven network to help players earn real exposure. With 138 alumni playing college ball, two in the NBA, and multiple pros overseas, the program’s reach speaks for itself. The Tigers’ consistency isn’t by accident, but built on trust, reputation, and an unwavering belief in developing players the right way.
Even with all the success, there have been moments of adversity. Maintaining excellence while navigating a changing grassroots landscape requires courage and conviction. Yet Chip remains anchored in the original vision, investing in players for life, staying true to the culture, and never being distracted by hype or trends. The Tigers’ longevity is proof that staying authentic and faith-driven will always win out.
For Chip, success isn’t defined by banners, but by brotherhood. It’s the alumni who return to coach. It’s the text messages years later that say, “Coach, thank you.” It’s the relationships that endure long after the final buzzer. The Tigers’ culture—#Tigers4Life—isn’t just a slogan; it’s a way of life.
At the heart of it all lies Chip’s powerful mission to positively impact young men on and off the court through basketball. His dream is to see every Tiger grow into a man of strength, character, and purpose. Years from now, when people talk about the TN Tigers, he hopes they’ll remember a program that was fiercely competitive, relentless in pursuit of excellence, and rooted in love and faith.
To every young athlete grinding in gyms and chasing dreams, Chip’s message is to approach every day with a “get to” mindset, not a “have to.” Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. Handle hard better—and know your best is yet to come.
