"Faith, Fire, and Brotherhood: The Unforgettable Run of Maryville’s Band of Brothers"

This is a dedication to a special group of young men from the Maryville basketball team. Over the course of this season, I had the privilege of covering them closely and building relationships with several of the players and their families. What first drew my attention to Maryville was something deeper than basketball. Faith sits at the center of every one of their stories. That alone had my full attention. But as the season unfolded, it became clear there was something even more powerful taking place within this program. The chemistry between the players, the brotherhood they shared, and the families behind them created something that felt far bigger than a team. It felt like a community.

Spending time around them, whether in the gym or away from the court, you quickly realized this group was connected in a way that is rare in sports today. The Sigmunds, the Woodlees, the Owensbys, and so many others made you feel like part of the family the moment you walked through the door. For me, it started with Big Luke. A funny inside joke turned into a bond that pulled the whole family into the connection, and through that relationship, Maryville truly came to life for me.

When you look back at their journey together, you begin to understand why this team was so special. Their story did not begin with this senior season. As sophomores, they fought their way to the Glass House with a strong 26-8 record, proving early that this group had something different. They returned in their junior season and did it again, making back-to-back trips to the Glass House for the first time in program history while battling their way to a 24-13 record. Those experiences built toughness, trust, and belief within the group, laying the foundation for what would become a powerful senior run.

Then came their final season together.

This group played with purpose. It was clear they were competing for something bigger than themselves. The senior core of Luke Sigmund, Jonathan Woodlee, and Eli Owensby formed a three-headed monster that was incredibly difficult for opponents to contain. Their scoring numbers were nearly identical, yet each brought a different element to the table that made them a matchup nightmare. Luke’s presence and leadership, Woodlee’s consistency and scoring ability, and Eli’s relentless fire created a trio that fed off each other every single night. Eli, in particular, became one of my favorite players to watch. I call him the British Bulldog because of the passion and intensity he brings every time he steps on the floor. He plays with heart, toughness, and emotion that lift everyone around him, yet he remains one of the most underrated guards in the state.

What made Maryville even more dangerous was the group around them. Julian Douglas, Will Luhn, JT Allen, Cade Barton, Lual Lual. and Kai Stowers all played crucial roles in the team’s success. Every one of them understood their role and maximized the opportunities they were given. Together, they formed an inside-out attack that, in my opinion, was as balanced and dangerous as any team in the state. That chemistry fueled an incredible season where Maryville climbed as high as #4 in the state rankings and finished with an outstanding 29-5 record while capturing a district championship.

They entered the regional tournament looking like a team destined for another trip to the Glass House. But basketball can be cruel sometimes. After falling just short in the regional final, their path forced them into a brutal win-or-go-home showdown with what many believe was the best team in the state on their home floor in Bearden. It was a hostile environment with everything on the line. Yet Maryville walked into that gym fearless and battled Bearden possession after possession in a war that went down to the final moments before ending in a heartbreaking 53-50 loss.

This band of brothers left everything they had on that floor. Every ounce of energy. Every bit of heart. They fought until the final buzzer, trying to earn one more trip to the Glass House together. And while the result did not fall their way, their 29-5 record speaks volumes about the kind of team they were.

This Maryville squad deserves to be remembered with the respect given to great teams. They were filled with underrated players who performed at an elite level in their roles and represented their school, their families, and their community with pride.

So I salute this Maryville team for an incredible season and an unforgettable journey. They should walk with their heads held high for everything they accomplished and for the culture they helped strengthen. The tradition at Maryville is rich and thriving, and the foundation laid by this group of seniors will continue to carry that program forward for years to come.
