When Brent took over as head coach of the Belfry boys' basketball team, he didn’t just accept a job; he embraced a mission. In the heart of Eastern Kentucky, Belfry basketball is more than a sport; it’s a family tradition, a source of community pride, and a reflection of mountain toughness. For Brent, stepping into this role meant honoring that heritage while ushering in a new era built on discipline, heart, and a relentless work ethic. “Generations have worn this jersey, swept these floors, and packed this gym,” he shared. “The responsibility to bring that pride back is something I don’t take lightly.”
From the moment he arrived, Brent began laying the foundation for what he calls a “small college” approach. The first phase was all about standards, showing up early, communicating, competing, and finishing everything, from drills to classwork. No detail was too small. How players huddle, talk on defense, or carry themselves in the hallway all became part of the culture he’s rebuilding. Grades, body language, and effort became non-negotiables. Under his guidance, the program has evolved into a model of accountability and consistency, complete with structured film sessions, individualized player development, year-round lifting, and constant dialogue between players and coaches.
Identity-wise, Belfry now plays with a style that reflects its head coach’s philosophy: defend, rebound, and run. Brent's Pirates pressure the ball, control the glass, and push pace with spacing and unselfishness. Offensively, it’s about mastering simple concepts at a high level: shot selection, balance, and teamwork. “We’re stacking small wins every day,” Brent said. “Better film sessions, better lifts, better communication, better decisions.” None of this, he adds, happens without his staff, each bringing unique strengths that have helped turn standards into habits and habits into expectations.
When it came to building the roster, Brent's focus was character before talent. Each addition to the team needed to fit the culture of discipline, accountability, and unselfishness. The staff targeted players who loved the game, could be coached hard, and made those around them better. Length, toughness, and versatility are key traits, but heart and coachability are what truly define a Belfry player. “We’re building from the inside out,” Brent emphasized. “The kind of guys who make everyone around them better.”
His coaching roots trace back to his own days as a player. A former college athlete whose career was cut short by injury, Brent discovered early on that teaching and coaching were two sides of the same coin. “Coaching is just teaching at full speed,” he said. His background in special education shaped how he communicates and develops players, breaking complex skills into manageable steps and celebrating growth at every level. That foundation drives his belief in high standards matched with high support, forming a program where every player knows what’s expected, and knows they’ll be pushed to reach it.
The opportunity to land at Belfry, Brent said, was more than just a professional move, but a personal alignment. “This place fits who I am,” he explained. “It’s tradition, pride, community. The administration and athletic staff have been fully behind our vision, and that’s vital when you’re trying to build something lasting.” His “why” is to influence young men through the game of basketball. The wins will come, but the true legacy, he believes, is found in the growth, discipline, and character of the players who pass through his gym.
For those who step into Belfry’s practices, they find a coach who demands excellence but leads with purpose. Brent’s players know they’ll be held accountable, but they also know their coach believes in them completely. Beyond the X’s and O’s, he wants every young man who wears a Belfry uniform to leave prepared for life. Tough, disciplined, and grateful. His vision for the future is to restore Belfry basketball to prominence and ensure that when people hear the name “Belfry,” they immediately think of pride, grit, and family.
As the Pirates gear up for the next chapter, one thing is certain: under Coach Brent Perry, Belfry basketball isn’t just being rebuilt. It’s being reborn.
