East Coach of the Year
Lighthouse Christian, TN
Coach William Smith carries the rare kind of leadership that can only be forged through lived experience, faith-rooted toughness, and a deep understanding of what Lighthouse Christian truly represents. He once wore the same jersey his players now wear. He felt the pressure of chasing Nationals as a student athlete. He tasted the heartbreak of getting close but not winning it. And now, after returning home as a grown man and mentor, he is building something even stronger than what he once dreamed of.
He remembers exactly what it was like as a player with the long practices, the chase for the national stage, the hunger of wanting to leave a mark. But coaching them now is different. It’s deeper. It’s purpose-driven and personal. When he took over three years ago, Lighthouse was at rock bottom. Only three varsity players remained; the rest were eighth graders thrown into the fire. They were outmatched in size, age, and experience, losing by twenty points every night. Parents approached him after games saying, “Y’all will be good in a couple years.” It was in those moments Coach Smith saw hope and potential. He saw culture waiting to be rebuilt. He saw a Future and kept believing, kept grinding, kept pouring faith into the program God had trusted him with.
Year two, the shift began. The boys started climbing. Talent developed. Pieces came together. Lighthouse suddenly became a team nobody wanted to schedule. They were tough, confident, physical, and disciplined, a group molded through adversity.
Year three was the explosion. Lighthouse won the state title in dramatic fashion, coming from behind after trailing every quarter to stun the favorite and shock the division. That victory wasn’t luck. It was sweat, prayer, discipline, and the belief that God’s favor was leading them. Coach Smith stood on the sideline watching everything he had poured into these young men come alive. Confidence, swagger, unity — it all clicked in that fourth quarter.
Then came the crushing blow. Despite winning state and earning their place, they didn’t get to go to Nationals due to administrative confusion. But Coach Smith refused to let it break them. He turned it into another chapter in the journey. Another reason to prepare harder. Another source of hunger.
When asked what the real reward is, he didn’t hesitate:
It’s not trophies. Not banners. Not applause.
It’s long life.
It’s the eternal impact that lasts long after basketball ends.
He knows the sport is a tool , a powerful one, to teach young men how to stand in adversity. Through basketball, he pours into them the truth that it is God who carries them, God who equips them, God who protects them, and God who guides them through the journey called life. Because after the final buzzer someday, they will be husbands, fathers, and leaders. And they need to be ready.
He tells his players all the time:
If they keep their focus simple — God first, family second, team third , everything else falls into place.
Coach Smith keeps the main thing the main thing. He doesn’t get caught up in what people think about the team. He doesn’t chase outside opinions. He knows what Lighthouse has, he knows what they’re building, and he knows what God is shaping inside these boys.
Relationships with God and brotherhood are the center of everything they do. His teaching, mentoring, and fatherhood blend into one powerful influence. He believes that if they keep God at the middle of the mission, everything they are chasing becomes possible.
Now, with the new season underway, Coach Smith sees the bigger picture of building Lighthouse into a program that can compete for state and national championships. He knows it won’t be easy. He knows the team will face criticism, doubt, and resistance. But he also knows the truth:
The only thing that can stop Lighthouse from winning the state and national championships… is themselves.
This is what he pours into them.
This is the fire he carries.
This is the flame that pushes Lighthouse Christian into each new chapter.
Coach Smith is not just building a team.
He’s building men.
He’s building culture.
He’s building a legacy rooted in Christ, carried by brotherhood, and fueled by a hunger that refuses to fade.
