6’9”, Class of 2025

Ballard High School, KY

Blake Russell is an athletic, versatile big who is a natural-born rim rocker. Blake plays like a man among boys with ruthless dunks, attacking the rim or on putbacks with malicious intent. Blake has good footwork and can efficiently knock down midrange shots or play very well off ball screens, showing phenomenal touch around the basket. With a nice jump shot, he can even slide out to launch a three with a smooth touch. Blake has great stamina and speed for a big man, as he ran a 5:22 mile and doesn't find himself getting tired on the court, thanks to his hard work in practice. Blake gobbles up rebounds like candy and is a fierce rim protector.

Blake played for Kentuckiana Hoops AAU on the NY2LA circuit, averaging roughly 10 points and 10 rebounds while also having standout games where he recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds or more.

Last season for Fairdale wasn’t a bad junior season for Blake, as he spent all three years there before transferring to Ballard High School for his senior year. Blake never got much playing time until his junior year. Last year, Blake started the season coming off the bench until they played Bowling Green in the 3rd place game of the King of the Bluegrass. Against 6’10” Mason Ritter, Blake got his first career varsity start and held Mason to just 3 points and 5 rebounds. After that game, Blake started for the remainder of the season until tournament time, when he was taken out of the starting lineup due to matchups. Blake averaged roughly 8 points and 9 rebounds per game during his junior season at Fairdale, with four double-double games.

Blake’s biggest improvement from last season has been becoming a better all-around player. During the offseason, he focused on honing his touch, extending his range for jump shots, and improving on the defensive end. His hard work is evident.

Blake's goals for this season are to average a double-double, win 7th Region Player of the Year, and make it to the state tournament. Achieving these goals will require Blake to work as hard as possible on the court and in the weight room while staying coachable. He has 100% trust in his coaches and knows they will help him reach his potential.

Blake’s basketball accomplishments this season are already impressive. He has won Player of the Game and All-Tournament Team honors at the Billy Hicks Classic and has been recognized for multiple performances where he scored over 20 points and grabbed 10+ rebounds.

The biggest game Blake is looking forward to is playing against Male High School. Known for its talent, including two Division I players, Male represents a significant rival and an excellent opportunity. With 6’8” Keshawn Jordan ranked higher than Blake in the state, it will be a chance to prove himself and showcase what his team is capable of this season.

Blake feels his team has the potential for a deep tournament run. Competing in a tough region that includes Saint X, Trinity, Male, and Manuel—three of which are ranked in the state’s top 10—requires discipline, focus, and preparation for every battle.

When facing adversity, Blake stays calm and trusts his teammates. He knows basketball is a team sport, and he can’t win games alone. Knowing his team has his back gives him confidence in challenging situations.

The best basketball advice Blake has ever received is to be mentally tough and stay coachable. He understands adversity is inevitable in basketball, as is criticism, but mental toughness and focus are key to overcoming obstacles. Competing in the 7th region means facing hostile environments, and staying coachable ensures growth and success.

Outside of basketball, Blake’s interests are simple. He enjoys attending sports events, especially football games, and spending quality time with his family, which means a lot to him. He also enjoys trying new foods, dining out, and playing video games with friends for fun.

As Blake strives for the next level, he knows it will take dedication on and off the court. His biggest goal in life is to be successful, and he believes focus and hard work are the keys. From a basketball standpoint, he knows he must get stronger, work harder, and remain mentally tough. Currently, Blake has offers from several Division III schools and interest from NAIA and Division II programs, including Centre, Hanover, Wabash, Marian Indianapolis, and more. He also had interest from the coach at Army West Point, which he sees as a major opportunity. While Blake feels he can thrive at a higher level, he remains grateful for his current opportunities and hopes for even bigger ones throughout the season.
