Every time Cortez steps on the floor, there’s a clear mission stamped all over his game. He’s wired to get his team going first, making sure everybody is involved and rolling. But the second things stall, everything shifts. That’s when he takes control, attacking the rim, finishing with force, and flipping momentum with defensive stops that hit just as hard. Energy and impact follow him. And when it’s time to go get one, he’s not hesitating.

On both days at the #PrimeTimeShowcase, that approach stayed locked in. Cortez didn’t fade in and out; he stayed active, stayed engaged, and kept finding ways to leave his mark. In a dominant blowout win over Team Thad, he put together a strong all-around performance with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block. That wasn’t just numbers on a page, that was control. Cleaning the boards, disrupting passing lanes, protecting the rim, and stepping up offensively when needed. He impacted the game from every angle and made sure his presence was known without forcing anything.

As the season moved from early games into postseason battles, things started lining up more naturally. The understanding of when to facilitate and when to take over became sharper. Instead of pressing, he began dictating pace, picking his spots, and delivering when his team needed it most. That balance is what’s starting to separate him.

Adversity tested him along the way. There were moments where shots didn’t fall, momentum shifted, or the game demanded more than just scoring. That’s where Cortez pushed through with energy and toughness. He responded by turning up defensively, crashing the boards harder, and finding other ways to impact the outcome. He didn’t disappear in those moments, he dug in deeper.

Right now, the biggest thing pushing his game forward is that mix of unselfish play and takeover ability. He’s not locked into one role. He can spark the offense early, then flip the switch and become a scoring threat instantly. Add in the defensive intensity and willingness to battle inside, and it’s a blend that keeps building.

With AL Truth, that same energy is carrying into AAU play. The focus is to get better every day and compete for something bigger. There’s a real drive to reach the UA Rise stage, and that pursuit is fueling everything he’s doing right now. Every possession, every game, every moment is another chance to prove it.

Looking ahead, the goals stay the same. Keep stacking performances, keep elevating his game, and keep pushing toward bigger stages. There’s a hunger there that doesn’t fade, and it shows in how he approaches every time he steps on the floor.

For any coach watching, the message is clear. Cortez brings scoring, energy, and defensive intensity every time out. He’s going to compete, make plays, and find ways to impact the game whether the ball is in his hands or not. And when the moment calls for it, he’s going to get a bucket.

I assess that Cortez is an impact player who affects winning in multiple ways without needing constant touches. His motor, toughness, and ability to shift momentum stand out immediately. He plays with a team-first mindset but has the confidence and ability to take over when needed. His defensive intensity, rebounding effort, and willingness to do the gritty work give him strong value on both ends.

He is poised to be a versatile two-way piece with real potential as his offensive game continues to expand. The foundation is built on effort and consistency, which translates to higher levels. As he continues developing his scoring consistency and overall skill set, his ceiling rises. Coaches can rely on what he brings every game, and that reliability, combined with his energy, makes him a player who can grow into bigger opportunities and produce when they come. Stay tuned.
