Slyker is a dynamic combo guard, who is a prolific 3 level scorer. He has an immense game IQ. He has strong ball handling skills and good court vision. He is difficult to shut down because if you try to get in his face, he finds the open man. If you try to take the lanes away, he will drive to the hoop or pop a shot from anywhere on the floor. The kid is cool as a cucumber under pressure and he plays with a high competitive drive. He mixes it up under the boards and is scrappy and tenacious on D.
This past season, he averaged 24.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.1 steals while shooting 2FG% 50, 3FG% 40, FT% 80% all as a freshman playing varsity! He finished the season with 825 points, earning him 1st Team ALL DISTRICT (District MVP), 1st Team ALL STATE TAPPS 3A, and TABC ALL STATE. He fully understands that now being a sophomore, his team will be counting on him even more to step up his game. He is hoping to win his school’s first ever State Championship. He has been working hard to be even more of a lockdown defender and look for more opportunities to attack the rim, as well as be more efficient on offense.
He possesses a natural drive that compels him to be the best he can be, and to perfect his craft. He has the ability to have a “next play mentality” never allowing one play to get into his head. Being a “team first” player allows him to focus more on the final score of the game, instead of just focusing on his own personal stats. He puts in the work to be successful at the next level and that makes him special. When asked what a coach can expect from him, he said “Persistence and discipline, both on and off the court.” That off the court part is proven by his 4.0 GPA!
My assessment is that this young man absolutely has the ability to play at the D1 level. I will go as far as to call him a rare player, who only comes along once every 10-20 years. He is an absolute program changer, that every coach dreams of being able to coach. He has that uncanny, competitive fire that burns deep down inside him, that simply can’t be taught. Remember where you heard it first. This kid’s future is BRIGHT, and his stock will only continue to rise as the years pass. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
