Every time Kolby steps on the floor, defenses know that giving him even the slightest amount of space can completely change a game within seconds. Kolby has developed into one of the most dangerous scorers around because of his elite shooting ability, playmaking instincts, and confidence attacking all three levels offensively. He can pull up from deep off the bounce, attack the paint to create for teammates, or finish strong inside when defenders overcommit to running him off the line. What makes Kolby such a dangerous player is not simply the shot-making itself, but the pressure he creates every possession because defenders must constantly account for him from the moment he crosses half-court. Once teams begin chasing him aggressively around the perimeter, he punishes them by getting paint touches, creating open looks for teammates, and making smart reads at a high level.
Kolby’s junior season was nothing short of electric as he averaged 19 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting a jaw-dropping 49% from three on 6.4 attempts per game, 61.6% from two, and 86% from the free throw line. What was clicking most was his shooting confidence and ability to make tough off-the-dribble threes at an elite rate. Defenders constantly tried forcing him off the line, but that only opened more opportunities for him to facilitate, attack gaps, and score inside. The season became even more meaningful because it was tied directly to winning at a historic level for Prior Lake. Winning the South Suburban Conference for the first time in school history meant more to Kolby than any individual honor because making history for the school and community carried tremendous value. While earning All-Conference First Team honors, Team Offensive Player of the Year, and breaking the school’s single-season three-point record were huge accomplishments, nothing stood above bringing that conference championship home.
The postseason run eventually ended in the section finals against Chaska, but the journey itself continued building momentum heading straight into AAU basketball. This spring and summer, Kolby has been competing with Hoop Habits while learning under Anthony Tucker, an experience he describes as a true blessing. The AAU grind has been filled with hard work, growth, and trusting the process daily while continuing to compete against strong talent. One thing that continues to stand out about Kolby is the confidence he now carries offensively, because over the last year, he has transformed from more of a facilitator into a complete three-level scoring threat capable of taking over stretches of games himself.
One of the biggest challenges Kolby faced this season was constantly battling bigger and more physical defenders while being an undersized guard standing at 6’0. Instead of allowing size disadvantages to become excuses, he embraced the challenge and continued proving he could still produce at a high level against bigger opponents. That adversity helped elevate his confidence tremendously because it showed him that his skill, pace, and shot-making could still create success regardless of who stood in front of him. Throughout the spring, he has attacked the weight room almost every day with the goal of becoming faster, stronger, and more physically prepared for the next level of competition.
The biggest improvement in Kolby’s game has been his ability to score at all three levels confidently. Earlier in his development, he leaned more toward facilitating, but now he has become a much more complete offensive weapon who can hurt defenses as both a scorer and creator. Heading deeper into AAU and beyond, his biggest offseason focus revolves around continuing to improve physically while tightening his assist-to-turnover ratio and becoming even more efficient as a lead guard.
Looking ahead to his senior season, coaches, teammates, and fans can expect a player who competes relentlessly, stays positive, and gives everything he has every single night. Kolby brings toughness, confidence, shot-making, and leadership while always keeping the team’s success first. Whether it is hitting momentum-changing shots, creating offense for teammates, or battling through adversity against bigger defenders, he approaches the game with a fearless edge that continues to make him one of the most dangerous guards around whenever the lights get brightest.
I assess that Kolby Thompson is a highly skilled lead guard whose shooting ability immediately changes defensive game plans. His ability to score efficiently from all three levels while also creating opportunities for teammates makes him extremely dangerous offensively. Kolby’s confidence, basketball IQ, and willingness to embrace tough matchups despite being undersized continue to separate him from many guards in his class.
Moving forward, Kolby has the tools and mentality to continue evolving into a highly impactful scoring guard capable of controlling games through shot-making, pace, and offensive decision-making. As he continues to add strength, speed, and consistency physically, his game becomes even tougher to defend because of the attention his shooting draws. His confidence, leadership, and work ethic provide a strong foundation for continued growth heading into a massive senior season. Stay tuned.
