6'3, Class of 2028
DePaul College Prep, IL
Blake is proof that basketball is about much more than scoring points. Every time he steps on the floor, he brings a different approach than what most players chase today. While many players are obsessed with firing up three pointers, Blake has built his game around making the right reads, finding the right spots, and taking what the defense gives him. His favorite weapon is a punishing middy, where he feels most comfortable creating space and getting to his spots with a quick move and a smooth pull-up jumper. Blake also takes pride in his defensive instincts, reading opponents, studying ball movement, and finding ways to create stops for his team. He is a player who understands that winning basketball is not always flashy. Sometimes it is about making the right play at the right time.
His season at DePaul College Prep may not have looked exactly the way he hoped statistically, but it became one of the most important years of his basketball journey. Playing on a loaded state championship-caliber program filled with talented players headed to the next level, Blake embraced the role his team needed from him. He averaged 4.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.3 assists, and 0.08 blocks while focusing heavily on defense and rebounding. Instead of worrying about individual numbers, he learned that impacting games through hustle, energy, and doing the little things can be just as valuable as scoring. That lesson helped shape his mindset and prepared him for the next stage of his development.
What makes Blake's story even more impressive is that basketball was not always his main focus. Before he fell in love with the game, he was more interested in gaming than basketball. Even though the sport had always been around him, everything changed after playing in a pickup game for fun. That experience sparked something inside him and pushed him to take basketball seriously. Since then, his drive has only grown stronger. Much of that motivation comes from his family. Watching his mother battle through difficult times and seeing the sacrifices she made created a fire inside him to keep pushing forward. His older brother's life experiences also became motivation. Blake wanted to create a different path while giving his family something to be proud of. Those experiences continue to fuel him every day.
One of the biggest improvements Blake made over the last year was learning how to embrace his role at the varsity level. Moving from being one of the featured players to becoming a role player on a talented roster was not easy. Instead of fighting that reality, he learned how to impact winning in different ways. His basketball IQ took a huge step forward as he became better at making quick decisions, finding open teammates, reading situations on the fly, and understanding how to help his team win. Those improvements have already started carrying over into AAU basketball, where his ability to think the game continues to stand out.
Like many athletes, Blake faced adversity that never showed up on a stat sheet. There were times during the season when his mental health became a challenge because he felt he was not producing at the same level he had before on JV. Even when coaches told him he was doing a good job, it was difficult not to compare himself to previous versions of himself. Instead of allowing those thoughts to consume him, Blake pushed himself to keep improving every day. He embraced the idea that every new day brings another opportunity to grow. That mindset helped him push through difficult moments and become mentally stronger. He also learned the importance of leadership during adversity. When teams go on runs and things are not going well, Blake believes it is important to bring teammates together, stay composed, and focus on how the group responds.
The list of accomplishments continues to grow. Blake is a two-time state champion, a two-time varsity player, a Downstate 15 selection, and an All-Conference performer. Among all of those achievements, the All-Conference recognition stands above the rest in his eyes. Even during a season where he felt he had more to give, being recognized by people across the state showed that his work and impact were being noticed. It served as confirmation that doing the little things and sacrificing for team success does not go unnoticed.
As AAU basketball continues and the future draws closer, Blake remains focused on staying true to the person he has always been. His goal is to finish strong with his AAU team while continuing to build on the habits that have brought him this far. He understands that surrounding himself with positive people and keeping the support system around him strong will be important as new opportunities arrive. Looking ahead, he believes his potential can take him to the next level and beyond. He knows that defense, basketball IQ, and a commitment to constant improvement will play a huge role in helping him reach that goal.
When coaches watch Blake Choice, they are not going to see a player chasing highlights or trying to impress people with flashy plays. They are going to see a player who competes, plays unselfishly, understands the game, and does whatever is needed to help his team win. Fans can expect to see a confident player who enjoys the game, embraces his role, and continues finding new ways to impact winning every time he steps on the floor.
I assess that Blake is a smart, team-first player whose value goes well beyond statistics. His basketball IQ, defensive awareness, ability to play within a system, and willingness to embrace whatever role is needed make him an important piece for any program. He understands how to affect games through effort, positioning, decision-making, and unselfish play.
Blake's ceiling continues to rise because of his maturity, mindset, and understanding of the game. Players who accept coaching, adapt to roles, and consistently look for ways to help their team succeed often make significant jumps over time. His continued growth as a defender, playmaker, and decision-maker should make him an even bigger factor moving forward. Expect Blake to continue evolving into a reliable leader, trusted teammate, and winning player who impacts games in ways that go far beyond the stat sheet.
