"The Magician’s Next Act: Fearless Fire, Sky-High Finishes and a Royal Future"

The wait tested him, the work built him, and his faith kept him believing his time was coming. Now Kobi’s journey has reached a special milestone as “The Magician” has officially committed to Johnson University, giving the Royals a fearless competitor, crafty scorer, smart floor general, and fiery leader who's spent his journey proving that heart, skill, and determination can speak much louder than height.

The connection with Johnson University started during BCAT, where Kobi put together several phenomenal games and caught the attention of Coach Sharp. The very next day, the phone rang with an offer, giving Kobi the opportunity he'd patiently worked toward. An official visit followed on August 30-31, allowing him to meet the coaching staff, spend time with the players, and experience the campus. The way the team welcomed him immediately stood out. He was treated like one of their own, enjoyed every minute of the visit, and knew before leaving that he'd found his home. One week later, Kobi called Coach Sharp with the words that made it official: he wanted to be a Royal.

That phone call carried plenty of meaning because getting there required patience when patience wasn't always easy. Kobi continually stepped onto the court against guys who already held offers or had made their college commitments, knowing in his heart that he could compete with anybody standing across from him. Instead of allowing another person’s journey to make him question his own, he leaned into his faith and trusted that God had a plan with his name on it.

His family was right there through every high and low, pushing him when he needed it and refusing to let him settle. They knew what he was capable of accomplishing, and their belief helped feed an already burning competitive fire. That combination of faith, family, and relentless work helped shape a guard who attacks every possession with something to prove.

It also helped create “The Magician.”

I gave Kobi that nickname because watching him play can leave you wondering if what you just saw really happened. He may be undersized for a guard, but that thought quickly leaves your mind once the ball goes up. His vertical pop and body control allow him to launch from one side of the basket and finish on the other, twisting through the air for finishes that can bring a crowd out of its seat. His jumper brings another weapon, as he can stop on a dime, rise high above a contest, and rain in shots before taller defenders can bother his release. His wingspan adds another wrinkle defensively, allowing him to bother ball handlers and play much bigger than his height.

Then comes the basketball IQ that makes the magic even harder to solve. Kobi reads what a defense gives him, understands when to change speeds, and can make an adjustment once opponents believe they have finally figured him out. That ability to think through the game has frustrated opposing coaches and earned praise from coaches who have worked with him. He's not just playing fast or relying on athletic ability. He's seeing the floor, processing what's happening, and finding another answer.

Johnson University is getting that same competitive edge along with a young man who wants to lead. Kobi wants to become Coach Sharp’s voice on the floor, helping teammates understand assignments, stay locked in, and play together. He also understands that leadership has to show itself through actions. His work in the gym, intensity during practice, and approach to every drill are part of the standard he plans to carry with him. Coach Sharp already has a strong culture in place, and Kobi wants to add his fire to it while helping push that bar even higher.

Before he becomes a Royal, however, there is unfinished business. Kobi is chasing a ring during his senior season. He was blessed to experience a state championship as a freshman at Independence High School, learning from an incredible team and seeing firsthand what championship basketball requires. This time, he wants to help earn one with his own fingerprints all over the run. The commitment hasn't changed his hunger because he views it as a milestone rather than the finish line. Every offseason rep still matters, every workout still has meaning, and the marathon continues.

That mindset says plenty about what Johnson University fans can expect when The Magician eventually steps onto campus. They're getting a guard with bounce around the basket, a tough jumper to contest, crafty scoring ability, strong defensive swagger, elite court awareness and the confidence to change his approach when an opponent tries taking something away. More importantly, they are getting someone who wants the smoke when competition heats up and wants his teammates bringing that same fire beside him.

His journey has also given him a message for younger athletes waiting on their own opportunity. Trust God’s timing, believe in the work, and never measure your path against somebody else’s. When doubt starts creeping in, Kobi believes the answer is simple: get back in the gym and work. He's learned that consistency matters more than having one great workout followed by days without the same effort. Twenty extra minutes of film, additional form shots, more sprints, or anything that creates one percent of growth can pile up over time. He also stresses academics because strong grades create opportunities while teaching discipline that carries far beyond the classroom.

Now that the commitment is real, Kobi can finally look back at those hours and understand what they helped create. He calls the feeling surreal and credits his parents for pushing him, along with the coaches, trainers, and teammates who poured into his journey. He also took time to thank me for having a hand in helping him along the way, something that makes writing this story hit a little differently for me.

I watched the journey. I watched the work. I watched the adversity, and I watched The Magician keep pulling another answer out of his bag until his opportunity finally came. Now Johnson University gets to see the show.

Kobi brings an electric combination of athleticism, creativity, toughness, and feel for the game. His ability to elevate around the basket makes him dangerous against size, while his pull-up shooting gives defenders another problem when they back away. He changes pace well, reads coverage quickly, and sees plays developing before they fully open. Defensively, his reach gives him the ability to challenge passes and bother opposing guards. His fearless nature might be his greatest weapon because he never looks at who has more size, attention, or recognition before competing. He believes he belongs on the floor with anybody, and his game backs up that confidence.

The Magician gives Johnson University a dynamic weapon with plenty of tricks in his bag and a mind that can unlock defenses in different ways. His bounce and hang time around the rim, quick-stop jumper, vision, and natural command can create headaches because taking away one option doesn't end the possession for him. He can shift gears, find another angle, or create for someone else. His willingness to communicate and set the tone through daily preparation adds even more value to what he brings. Kobi waited for his opportunity without letting the wait change his belief, and now the Royals are getting a battle-tested guard ready to turn years of grinding into his next chapter.
