Nickname: They call him Mini-Luca - he's the size of a big and moves like an unpredictable guard.
KJ has earned the nickname “Mini-Luka” from multiple AAU teams, not because he calls himself that, but because his game backs it up. With the size and versatility of a big guard, he can light it up from deep if given space, finish strong at the rim through contact, and read the floor with the poise of a much older player. His court vision is excellent, his basketball IQ is fierce, and he plays with a mix of skill, confidence, and energy that keeps defenses guessing. Whether he’s raining threes or attacking the lane, KJ has the ability to take over stretches of a game.
This past season, he hit an impressive 86 three-pointers, while improving his finishing ability, getting to the hoop, and overall shooting percentage. His growth as a driver and decision-maker has made him even harder to guard. He was a key factor in his team’s BODYARMOR tournament championship run, and he delivered in high-pressure moments, like hitting two clutch free throws with 30 seconds left in a comeback win. His AAU record of roughly 36-8 is even more impressive considering many losses came against older teams.
A coach can expect maximum effort, unselfish play, and a contagious attitude every time KJ steps on the court. He sets individual game goals to keep his performance sharp, but his biggest focus is winning. Next season could bring an exciting challenge, possibly playing up with the 8th graders as a 6th grader, and he’s eager to make an impact if given the chance.
For KJ, basketball is more than just a game but a platform to honor God. His faith is the foundation of who he is, and his favorite verse, Proverbs 3:5-6, guides his life: “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” He plays with joy and purpose, using his talents as a way to give glory to Jesus Christ. That faith fuels his work ethic, his resilience, and his passion for competing the right way.
What fires him up most is momentum, hitting a clutch three, sparking a scoring run, or getting a big block. When facing adversity, he presses harder, locks in, and keeps moving forward. Off the court, KJ loves spending time with his siblings, fishing, bowling, playing Fortnite with family, hanging out with friends, and enjoying board games. Training with his family in the mornings is a favorite, especially as he closes the gap on his older sister, who already has major D1 offers.
I assess that KJ’s combination of shooting range, playmaking vision, and ability to handle physical finishes gives him a balanced and dangerous offensive game for his age. His high basketball IQ and willingness to share the ball make him a steady presence who elevates everyone around him. His work ethic, energy, and mental toughness are clear strengths that consistently translate into winning moments.
Over the next few years, expect KJ to improve his left-hand handles, expand his strength, and grow as a versatile guard who can lead and score at a high level. His unshakable faith, competitive spirit, and leadership potential will allow him to thrive in any role, at any level of youth competition, and make him a player to watch as he develops. Stay tuned.
