5’10, 175lbs, Class of 2027

Hesston High School, KS

Gavin isn’t the tallest on the floor. He’s not the flashiest. But what he lacks in size, he makes up for in sheer will, grit, and determination that never lets up. Coming out of small-town Hesston, Kansas, Gavin has carried the weight of being overlooked his entire life and turned it into fuel. Every doubt, every whisper that he’s too small or not enough, adds another layer to the chip on his shoulder. He’s a compact powerhouse at point guard, with muscle, toughness, and a hunger that drives him to outwork and outthink whoever stands across from him. He’s a knockdown shooter, a crafty passer, a defensive DOGG, and a leader who brings energy to every single play. Whether he’s diving for a loose ball, locking up on defense, or threading a pass through traffic, Gavin plays with a fire built on something deeper, with miles of heart. He’s not just trying to prove he belongs; he’s working to thrive at this level and beyond.

This past season, Gavin averaged 7 points, 5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 3.5 rebounds per game, numbers that barely scratch the surface of what he brings to the floor. His shooting and passing improved drastically, and his presence grew louder as he took steps forward as a leader. He helped lead Hesston to a state championship and established himself as the kind of player coaches dream thats tough, selfless, smart, and relentless. He’s the first to the floor, the one who sets the tone, the one who keeps his teammates locked in. And while others might overlook his size, Gavin uses it as a weapon, drawing comparisons to guys like Jalen Brunson with his ability to post up guards, finish through contact, and score with comfort around the rim.

This offseason, Gavin is grinding hard to expand his scoring bag, focusing on creating his own shot, shooting off the dribble, and becoming a true three-level scorer. He’s also working on his handles, timing, and vision, pushing to raise his assist numbers and facilitate the game at an even higher level. He already sees the floor well and embraces the pressure; now, he’s improving the tools to attack defenses and create opportunities no matter the matchup.

When it’s time to go, defense is what lights his fire. A big stop leads to a big run, and for Gavin, there’s nothing like locking someone up, pushing the ball, and watching it fall on the other end. When facing adversity, he settles the team, finds rhythm with a stop, and leads with composure and poise. He plays with passion, but his approach is instinctive and calm. The best advice he’s ever received is, “It’s the little details that are vital; little things make big things happen.”

With a 3.5 GPA and a drive to succeed in everything he does, Gavin is building for something bigger. He firmly believes he can play D1 basketball, and that belief isn’t built on hype. It’s built on sweat, consistency, and an unshakable mindset. He knows where he’s going, and he’s ready to earn it.

Off the court, Gavin loves time with family and friends, being outdoors, watching sports, and exploring new places. But when it’s time to lock in, Gavin becomes a different beast, one with something to prove and everything to gain.

I assess that Gavin is a floor general who brings far more than stats. His heart, leadership, defensive tenacity, and ability to make winning plays make him a hidden gem with real value. Any program that bets on him will gain a gritty, high-IQ guard who refuses to be outworked.

As his scoring ability continues to rise and his confidence grows, Gavin is set to break through the noise. He’s not just fighting for a spot; he’s preparing to dominate it. Underrated for now, but not for long, because Gavin Larson is built for the climb, and he's just getting started. Stay tuned for a breakout season ahead, one that will make a statement.
