Gavin “Goose” Groves has quickly built a reputation as one of the most versatile rising players in Kentucky. His ability to easily switch into four positions makes him an instant mismatch. Goose is a fierce rebounder who isn’t afraid to battle undersized centers, and his timing as a shot blocker can completely disrupt an opponent’s rhythm. What separates him even more is his balance on the offensive end, poised footwork, a smooth middy, lethal three-point shooting, and a fearless finishing ability at the rim. Add in his high-level poise and calm presence in tense moments, and you get a competitor who embodies everything coaches love in a leader.

The numbers tell part of the story. This past high school summer session, Goose averaged 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1 steal per game over four games for Muhlenberg County. Across both AAU and high school competition, he added another stretch of 13.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting a blistering 64% from the field and 82% at the free-throw line in nearly 27 minutes of play. Efficiency, consistency, and an ability to fill the stat sheet make him stand out in every setting.

The biggest improvement has come from his confidence in creating his own shot and taking on defenders one-on-one. Stronger and more athletic, Goose is now comfortable being a go-to scoring option, while still keeping a team-first mentality. His developmental focus is locked on quickening his first step, tightening his handles, and lifting his three-point percentage even higher. With his competitive edge, expect to see him expand his offensive arsenal while continuing to make the defensive plays that fire him up most, blocking a shot, then running the floor and scoring in transition.

Coaches should know what they’re getting: a hard worker who listens, learns, and executes. He is extremely coachable, unselfish, and always puts the team first. His AAU goals reflect that mindset, gain exposure, battle against top talent, and grow his overall game. He thrives in competitive environments, but always carries himself with composure, never rattled, no matter how tough the moment. For his high school team, he’s embracing the challenge of stepping into a bigger role, not only as a scorer but as a leader whose voice and example will drive the group forward.

Off the court, Goose maintains the same discipline that fuels his game. A 4.0 GPA reflects his commitment to academics, while his love for fishing and the outdoors shows his grounded, balanced personality. He credits that to his best coaching advice, “Always be coachable, be a team player, and always work hard”, as a standard he lives by every day.

I assess that Goose’s versatility is rare at his size. The ability to defend multiple positions, protect the rim, and stretch the floor offensively makes him a natural fit for any college system. His combination of poise, efficiency, and selflessness ensures he will always raise the level of those around him.

His potential makes him a player who will continue to blossom into a complete two-way weapon. As his first step, handles, and long-range consistency improve, expect Goose to become not just a reliable piece but a game-changing leader. With his character, work ethic, and hunger, the Goose is ready to soar well beyond expectations. Stay tuned for a breakout season ahead.
