Every now and then, a player steps on the floor that brings a little bit of everything while making the game look smooth, controlled, and dangerous all at once. That is exactly the kind of player Oliver Villalobos continues to become. Whether it’s raining in shots from deep, slicing his way into the paint with crafty footwork, creating transition opportunities, or setting teammates up for easy finishes, Oliver constantly finds ways to impact winning basketball from every angle possible.
Oliver described himself as a capable shooter that can also attack the rim and create offense for teammates, and that complete offensive package was on full display at the Prep Hoops Upper Midwest Finals. Throughout the weekend, he became one of the biggest sparks for Minnesota Fury, helping fuel momentum-changing runs with pace, energy, and smart basketball. In four games, Oliver averaged 18.5 points, 2.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals while raining in 11 total threes. Those numbers alone tell a strong story, but the impact went even deeper once the games started speeding up.
One of the biggest moments of the entire event came when Oliver hit a buzzer-beater against Sanford Sports Academy to force overtime. That shot perfectly captured the confidence and poise he played with all weekend long. Big moments never seemed too big for him. Instead, he kept making timely plays whenever Minnesota Fury needed momentum, whether it was scoring, creating steals defensively, or attacking gaps in transition before defenses could recover.
During the physical win over Sanford Sports Academy, Oliver stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists while constantly pressuring the defense. He explained that the biggest thing clicking during that matchup was the pace Minnesota Fury played with. Once Fury started speeding Sanford up and forcing transition opportunities, everything opened offensively. That fast pace allowed Oliver to attack in space, make reads on the move, and capitalize before the defense could settle in.
The chemistry and energy within the Fury roster also continued improving throughout the weekend. Oliver talked about how much fun the run became because the team was finally starting to click together more naturally while finding success as a unit. That growing chemistry showed itself in the way the team moved the ball, defended aggressively, and trusted one another during difficult stretches of games.
While his offensive skill set grabbed attention, Oliver takes pride in his ability to help teammates succeed as well. He loves being able to impact the scoreboard, whether through his own scoring or by creating easy opportunities for others. On top of that, defense has become another area he is attacking hard because he knows taking another step defensively can unlock an even bigger role moving forward.
This past high school season at Lakeville South became another important chapter in his basketball journey. Playing up on JV gave him valuable experience while also allowing him to be part of a varsity program that made a strong postseason push all the way to the state tournament. Although the season ended against eventual state champion Chaska, simply experiencing that environment became one of the biggest moments of his young career so far. Being around a winning culture and high-level basketball only fueled his hunger even more heading into the AAU season.
Adversity also tested him early this spring when he suffered a back injury during Fury’s first tournament. Trying to return too quickly only caused him to miss additional tournaments, forcing him into another difficult stretch mentally and physically. But after putting in the work to recover properly, Oliver returned healthy and immediately started producing at a high level again. That process taught him patience while also making him appreciate the game even more.
One of the biggest improvements in Oliver’s game over the last year has been his perimeter and mid-range shooting. His confidence offensively continues rising because he now has the ability to hurt defenses from multiple spots on the floor. Combined with his crafty footwork and ability to create in transition, his offensive arsenal keeps becoming more dangerous.
Looking ahead, Oliver’s focus remains focused on improving defensively and preparing for a much larger role next high school season. Coaches, teammates, and fans can expect effort, energy, scoring, playmaking, and somebody constantly trying to help the team succeed, however necessary. Oliver takes pride in getting teammates involved and creating opportunities for others while still attacking himself aggressively.
The rise continues for Oliver, and after a huge weekend at the Prep Hoops Upper Midwest Finals, more people are starting to recognize just how dangerous his complete game is becoming.
Oliver is a versatile offensive weapon that impacts games through scoring, pace, shooting, and playmaking. His ability to shoot from deep, attack the rim creatively, and create easy opportunities for teammates gives him tremendous offensive versatility. Oliver also competes hard defensively and brings strong instincts in transition, where he becomes especially dangerous. His confidence and overall offensive efficiency continue taking strong steps forward.
Oliver’s combination of crafty scoring, perimeter shooting, and playmaking ability allows him to affect games in several different ways offensively. He plays with poise, confidence, and strong basketball instincts while constantly looking to create momentum for his team. As his defensive consistency and overall physical development continue improving, his upside keeps climbing because of the complete offensive package he already brings to the floor. The scary thing is that Oliver's best basketball is still ahead of him. Stat tuned.
