Class of 2029

Anderson County HS, TN

From the moment he stepped onto the field, JD Gillum commanded the night like it belonged to him. The freshman with the golden arm and the poise of a savvy veteran played with an electric edge that drew every eye in the stadium. He is dynamic, crafty, and relentless, the kind of quarterback who brings order to chaos and turns pressure into magic. Every snap feels alive when it leaves his hands, his confidence radiating through his teammates like current through a wire. The kid with the golden arm is not just playing football, he is paving the road to greatness with every read, every throw, and every moment he steps between those lines.

Under the brightest lights against Alcoa, JD delivered a performance that will not be forgotten. Facing a program that had ruled the region for years, he went 10 for 19 passing for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns, leading Anderson County to one of the biggest wins in school history. From his first drive, he played with precision and control, carving up a defense loaded with athletes and pride. Jayzonne Thompson opened the night with a stunning 99-yard touchdown run, finishing with 155 rushing yards and setting the tone for what was to come. Damien Leavell followed with a statement game of his own, catching 2 touchdowns, including a 61-yard bomb and the game-winner that sealed the deal. Gabe St. John hauled in a touchdown to keep the pressure on, while Jaxon Price, Brayden Sharper, and Elijah Johnson each came through with big receptions that kept drives alive when it mattered most. Rocky Brown provided key runs that kept the chains moving and the defense honest. And behind it all, the offensive line dominated the trenches with a relentless attitude, giving JD the time, protection, and confidence to pick apart one of the toughest teams in Tennessee. Without their toughness and discipline up front, none of this masterpiece unfolds.

JD has been nothing short of remarkable all year, completing passes at a .708 clip with a quarterback rating of 127.6. Earlier this season, he threw for over 400 yards and 7 touchdowns against Union County, a night that turned heads across the state. His calm under pressure and fiery leadership have become the heartbeat of this team. Jayzonne Thompson has been a force on the ground all year, piling up 1,283 yards on 126 carries, averaging 160.4 yards per game with 17 rushing touchdowns. His combination of vision, speed, and power sets the tone every Friday night. Together, they form a relentless offense fueled by chemistry, preparation, and trust.

JD’s maturity and football mind are far beyond his years. Early in that Alcoa game, he noticed a key mismatch with a running back shifted to safety and immediately began exploiting it. His eyes scanned, his reads came fast, and his throws hit windows most quarterbacks would not dare attempt. Then came the moment that broke the game open. Late in the fourth quarter, with everything on the line, JD dropped back and fired a dart to Jaxon Price, who weaved through defenders and flipped the momentum entirely. It was the spark that turned the crowd into thunder and cemented Anderson County’s name in the headlines.

This season has not been perfect, but that is what makes it special. The Mavericks have faced injuries and adversity all year, yet every setback only made them stronger. JD led through it all with calm focus and unshakable belief. He and his teammates refused to break, pushing through every obstacle with heart and grit. This win over Alcoa was not just a victory, it was a statement of who they are and what they represent. It was a triumph for the entire community that has backed them every step of the way.

Now with the regional crown secured, JD and the Mavericks have their eyes on something bigger. He promises faster tempo, sharper execution, and a team that refuses to be satisfied. His drive comes from his faith, his focus rooted in staying in the Word of God, which gives him balance, peace, and strength to lead with purpose. That faith fuels everything he does, on and off the field, shaping the way he handles success and keeps him humble through it all.

JD knows how fast this game moves and how precious every moment is. After battling through injury earlier in the year, he understands that football is not guaranteed, and every snap is a blessing. He plays with gratitude now, thankful for his coaches who pour belief into him, for his teammates who give everything beside him, and for his father, whose guidance and influence built the foundation of the quarterback and the young man he is becoming.

I assess that JD Gillum is a rare blend of arm strength, awareness, and control. His timing, accuracy, and ability to stay composed in chaos make him a true difference maker. He sees the field like few his age and knows how to use his weapons to perfection. Surrounded by game-breaking talents like Jayzonne Thompson, Damien Leavell, and Gabe St. John, JD’s leadership transforms their talent into a well-oiled offensive machine. He does not just command a team, he elevates it.

As his career continues, JD’s ceiling is sky high. His combination of faith, preparation, and relentless work ethic makes him the kind of quarterback programs are built around. With continued growth and experience, he will only become more dangerous. JD Gillum is not just the future of Anderson County football, he is its heartbeat right now, and the golden arm leading the Mavericks down a path lined with greatness. Stay tuned.
