"Forged Through Fire: Wayne County’s Breakthrough Run Was No Accident"

Wayne County didn’t just make a run, they built something that kept growing stronger every step of the way, turning early questions into real belief as the chemistry between Landon Preece, Colton Heck, and the rest of this group became the heartbeat of a team that learned how to trust each other, respond to every moment, and rise together when it counted.

By the time they hit the state tournament, this wasn’t a team just happy to be there, they came to prove they belonged, and they made that loud and clear in a 72-48 statement win over #4 Doddridge County as Landon went to work with 29 while Colton Preece added10 and did all the little things that keep everything flowing, the kind of impact that doesn’t always scream in the stat sheet but shows up all over the game.

That performance wasn’t random, it was the result of everything clicking halfway through the season when the group finally found its rhythm, the ball started moving the right way, trust became real, and everybody settled into their roles as Colton Preece’s feel and IQ helped connect everything while Landon’s steady presence gave them something they could lean on even through adversity like that five game losing stretch that could have split them but instead brought them tighter.

When the postseason hit, that connection only got stronger, and it showed, but this run wasn’t carried by just one or two names because Colton Heck stepped right into those big moments and delivered, dropping 21 in that opening win by attacking downhill, finishing through contact, and making smart plays, then turning right back around and exploding for 29 against eventual repeat champion Wheeling Central, proving he could go toe to toe with anybody on that stage and earning All-StateTournament honors in the process.

And then there’s Carter Ross, the one who made everything go, a true pass first point guard who controlled the tempo, saw everything before it happened, and put his teammates in perfect spots all night long, highlighted by an 18 dime performance against Doddridge where he was carving up the defense, pushing the pace, and making sure everybody ate without needing to look for his own.

Even in the semifinal loss to Wheeling Central, a team that went on to repeat, Wayne County never flinched, and by that point the message had already been sent, this wasn’t a one time thing, this was a glimpse of what’s coming as this program keeps rising with a group that now knows exactly what it takes to win on that stage.

This wasn’t the end of the story; it was the start of something that’s only getting louder.
