Deven Krause has brought an electric combination of speed, toughness, attitude, and versatility to a perfect 4-0 start, but the heartbeat of his game begins with something much deeper than what shows up in his numbers. Deven understands his role, trusts the guys beside him, and takes pride in executing whenever his number is called, whether that means carrying the football, catching it out of the backfield, or stepping onto the defensive side at linebacker. That team-first mentality has become a major part of what separates him, because Deven is willing to give his coaches whatever they need while bringing fierce energy every time he steps onto the field.
His production through four games shows just how dangerous he's become with the football in his hands, as Deven has already piled up 487 rushing yards, 79 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. Those numbers have fueled the unbeaten start, yet Deven is quick to turn the attention to the guys making it happen with him. He credits an outstanding offensive line for opening running lanes, along with a quarterback and receiving group that keeps defenses from loading everything toward the rushing attack. He also knows the defense has his back, creating a complete team effort that's allowed the offense to find its rhythm while Deven delivers explosive production out of the backfield.
One of the biggest improvements in his game has been the speed he added since last season, and his work as a track athlete has played a major role in that jump. Kruse improved his 400-meter time by more than a second and a half after only one season of running track, giving him another gear that's translated directly to football. That added quickness has made him even more dangerous once daylight opens, allowing him to hit the crease and turn extra yards into much bigger gains. His physical running style was already a weapon, but mixing it with improved speed has given defenses another challenge when trying to keep him contained.
For all the individual success, Deven points to his team's 4-0 record when talking about what means the most. He understands football is built around eleven guys working toward the same goal, and he doesn't take for granted the teammates surrounding him. One of his biggest personal moments came against Hillcrest when he punched in three touchdowns, helping keep the unbeaten run rolling while showing how much damage he can create when the offense gets moving. Those trips to the end zone mattered, but sharing that success with a group he believes in made the night mean even more.
Getting here has required much more than showing up on game night, because Deven and his teammates have been working to build a different energy and culture after losing several guys from the program. In his words, they may have lost numbers, but they gained heart, and that heart has shown through the work required to begin the season unbeaten. Deven has also battled ankle issues that require both ankles to be taped and spatted before games, with athletic trainer Sarah Reuss playing an important role in helping him prepare to compete. Rather than allowing those challenges to slow his drive, he continues buckling down, doing the work and finding ways to give his team everything he has.
That willingness becomes even more valuable because Deven can impact the game at running back and linebacker. Last season, he had 41 tackles, including 13 solo stops and a sack in eight games, showing that his physical nature doesn't end when the offense leaves the field. His two-way ability gives the coaching staff another option whenever they need him, and Deven embraces being available wherever his team needs help. Carrying the football lets him attack a defense with speed and power, while playing linebacker brings out his toughness, instincts, and willingness to battle on the other side.
The work behind that production continues when nobody is watching, whether Deven is getting extra reps on the field, attacking the weight room, or studying film. He wants every part of that grind to make him better while also helping push his teammates forward, because his goals extend far beyond individual numbers. Deven wants to help bring home a league title and make a CIF championship run, with a deep playoff push carrying even more meaning because of what football has become to the players and the school culture they are building.
Film study also feeds directly into how Deven approaches each snap, as he watches where defenders line up, studies their tendencies, and looks for clues about where they are heading once the ball moves. He adjusts as the game unfolds instead of expecting every look to stay the same, using what he learns to help himself react quicker and attack what the defense gives him. More importantly, Deven wants coaches to know they can rely on him without needing everything focused on him. Being the star isn't what drives him, because giving full effort on every play and earning trust through his actions means much more.
At the heart of everything is a real love for football and the bond Deven shares with his teammates. Playing for his boys gives him a fire that can't be measured by rushing yards or touchdowns, while the game continues teaching him dedication, endurance, and grit that he believes will help shape the man he becomes. Football has given him another place to grow, compete, and fight beside people he cares about, and that connection continues pushing him every time he straps it up.
I assess that Deven brings a powerful combination of improved speed, physical running, vision, and two-way value that has become a major weapon during the unbeaten start. His track development is showing when he finds space, while his ability to study defensive tendencies gives him another advantage before the football is snapped. Add his willingness to contribute at linebacker, and Deven offers a broad collection of tools that can impact a game in several different ways.
What stands out beyond the production is Deven's commitment to doing whatever helps his team win, backed by preparation that stretches from film study to the weight room and extra field work. He embraces contact, accepts whatever role his coaches need, and keeps pushing through ankle concerns that require extra preparation before kickoff. Deven is chasing something much bigger than personal recognition, and his relentless work is helping drive a team determined to make this season one they will remember. Stay tuned.
