Luke is a versatile big who is starting to come into his own with the size and skill to make some real noise this upcoming season. He is pushing hard to maximize his abilities to impact the right college program. He can play the post with his back to the basket or face up and use his length to shoot over defenders. However, he loves to slide out and bring the rain from downtown from time to time. Luke works for the boards like a big should and is a solid rim protector. He also passes well for a big.
This past season Luke averaged 9.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks while fighting injuries. Luke's biggest improvement since last season is that he is getting a quicker first step and attacking the rim. In AAU playing for the WV Hustle Luke elevated his game as he averaged 14.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.9 blocks, and 0.7 steals against some great competition. Because the competition was bigger, and quicker, these more skilled players helped Luke take his game to a higher level to compete with these players. Every time Luke steps on the court now, he has a sense of urgency and is hungrier than ever to get better.
Luke learned over the summer no matter when or where you play there will always be coaches watching, so that has motivated Luke to perform to his highest ability every time he is on the court. An example of this is a game in Myrtle Beach they were playing a really big and athletic team. He knew right away he had to have a big game. It was one of the best games he played all summer. Luke had 18 points and 10 rebounds. That was a defining moment for Luke! Luke has been building on that performance and putting in more work than ever. So this upcoming season can be special, and everyone can see a healthy talented version of Luke entering his final season.
Luke feels the biggest challenge he will be facing this upcoming season will be handling every big man. He will have to hold his ground because his team doesn't have very many players on his team that can play the 4 or 5 this year.
Luke doesn't feel that there was any certain player or team that was better than his team. They are going to have to still have the same mindset where they just attack every team that is in their path to prove the doubters wrong again. Luke feels like most people don't think Sissonville can have the same success again this year. For a long time, it was the school everyone circled as a win. Luke said it's time to wake everyone up this year! He plans on playing with a chip on his shoulder with purpose and a fire that will burn so strong no one can slow down him or the team. Luke wants to tell every freshman to be prepared for any play or player because high school basketball is no joke and there are grown men in this sport so you better be prepared to face them.
Luke feels he accomplished all of his goals this AAU session. Right now his biggest focus is to just keep grinding the rest of this offseason getting himself and his body prepared for the upcoming season and beyond. Luke has truly caught the vision of the player he can be and is pushing himself to fulfill that vision and more.
My assessment, from the first time I saw Luke, was he could be a really strong D2 player. He could develop into a special talent with that size and skill set. There is no limit to the potential this young star possesses and how good he can be by elevating his passion and work ethic in the gym and weight room. And now that Luke sees and believes, you all better look out for this runaway train and be warned not to get in his path.
