Hermantown HS, MN

Sawyer is a bruit force with a modern motor, an old-school bruiser with new-school versatility. He brings punishing power to the paint and the mindset to back it up. A matchup nightmare for opponents, Sawyer uses his size, strength, and footwork to impose his will around the rim. Whether he’s posting up and going to work or protecting the basket on defense, he brings high energy and pride to every possession. He’s a relentless rebounder, a walking double-double, and a defensive enforcer with fierce instincts and the timing to disrupt everything inside. Simply put, he brings a brand of basketball that never goes out of style.

As a sophomore, Sawyer earned All-Conference honors while averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block per game. His biggest improvement came in confidence, believing he could produce at a high level against older competition and proving it night after night. One of his standout moments came in a monster performance where he dropped 36 points and grabbed 19 boards. That kind of impact didn’t go unnoticed. His coach believed in him and gave him a starting role, and Sawyer earned the respect of the upperclassmen by doing what he does best: outworking everyone. This offseason, he’s focused on expanding his midrange game to add another weapon to his already strong inside presence.

Sawyer plays AAU ball for Playmakers Showcase North under Coach Dee Briggs, where he’s continuing to improve his skills and build off another strong season. He thrives in tough environments like the NY2LA event in Iowa but also finds joy in playing at home in front of family and friends. Next season, he’s ready to embrace a leadership role and set the tone for his varsity team. What fires him up the most is bullying through defenders, finishing through contact, and converting that and-one power plays that set the energy in the gym.

When facing adversity, Sawyer is learning to stay quiet, stay patient, and let his game do the talking. His mentality is grounded in discipline, work ethic, and a steady belief in handling things the right way. The best advice he follows is, : “Fundamentals are key. always work on the little things.” It’s a mindset that matches his style., strong, steady, and built to last.

Off the court, Sawyer loves the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and enjoying the quiet away from the noise. Nicknamed “Big Country,” he embraces who he is: big, strong, and unafraid of physicality. That identity isn’t changing, and neither is the impact he brings every time he steps on the floor.

I assess that Sawyer’s combination of physical strength, rebounding dominance, and back-to-the-basket scoring gives him rare value in today’s game. His defensive grit and team-first mentality are the kind of intangibles that make a real difference for programs looking to build around toughness and effort.

Expect Sawyer to continue making noise across Minnesota. With expanded range and a growing leadership role, “Big Country” is set to anchor Hermantown and keep climbing the ranks as one of the fiercest bigs in the Class of 2027. He has unmatched potential and likely to have another breakout season. Stay tuned.
